A Japanese company has unveiled an airbag which is designed to be worn by elderly people, to protect them when they fall over.

The wearable airbag, pops out when it detects you are about to take a tumble.

Weighing 1.1kg, the airbag attaches to the waist, made to look like a bum bag.

Designed to protect the back of the head and the buttocks, the two bags inflate with 15 litres of gas each, in one-tenth of a second, when sensors detect a fall.

Tokyo-based company, Prop, revealed the device which costs Y148, 000 ($A1, 685), at a fair of products for the elderly and people with disabilities.
