Roxon comes out fighting after Medicare defeat with new bill

25/09/2008 12:18:00 PM.  | John Barrington
The Federal Government is locked in talks with key Senators, over further changes to the Medicare levy surcharge.

Labor's key budget measure to increase the income threshold on the Medicare levy surcharge has been defeated in the Senate overnight, with the Coalition and Family First voting against the bill.

The Government will introduce a new version of the bill today, setting the threshold to $75,000 for singles, and indexing that threshold as wages increase over time.

Health Minister Nicola Roxon hopes it's enough to change the minds of the Opposition.

“It’s up to the Liberal party now to provide tax relief to 330,000 people.”

But Shadow Health Minister Peter Dutton says that won't be happening.

“We don’t support bad policy.”

I have been paying for private health insurance since earning a graduate wage of $22,000 as a Graduate in 2001. I believe that there should be some component of user pays where people are working in respect to the sort of health care covered by Private Health Insurance. It simply should not be free where you are earning money. It is not the government's or the tax payers problem you are not insured. The average tax payer will pick up the tab.Nicola darling what sort of tax break is that?

Typical Labor-changing the system for ideological reasons without any modeling as to what the drop out from Private cover would mean for the already struggling Public Hospital system. After all it was Labor’s Gough Whitlam that started the downward slide of the Public System when he introduced so called Universal Health Cover-some one has to pay.

And the bunnies who pay now are the ones who are covered for those who don't give a damn - many work also so what does that mean - wasn't it Keating that said that the public system was good enough for him (he was then the Prime Minister)- the "scumbag" never paid a cent to private cover because he would have been looked after no matter what!
