Greens launch coal mine protest at Bondi

26/09/2008 5:25:00 PM.  | AAP
A giant inflatable whale has dominated a Greens protest in Sydney's east against gas exploration off the NSW coast.

About 60 people turned out at Bondi Beach today to collect signatures against plans by a local energy company to search for coal deposits under a 6,000 square-kilometre area off the NSW coast.

The coal can be converted into gas using an experimental method called underground coal gasification (UCG).

NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett and Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull, who both live in Sydney's eastern suburbs, would be urged to oppose the mining.

Ms Rhiannon said UCG would impact local and global environments.

"The method they use is that they drill into the coal and set fire to it and they extract the gas off it," Ms Rhiannon told AAP.

"As far as we can ascertain it hasn't been undertaken offshore."

She said UCG produced a high level of greenhouse gas emissions and would damage marine life.

"In terms of the local impact, one of our big concerns is for whale migration," Ms Rhiannon said.

"There's also then the issue of pollution and disturbance. The sea bed is made up of a large amount of sediment.

"When that's disturbed the clarity of the water decreases ... this reduces the penetration of the sunlight and that then impacts on the cycles of the marine life."

Attempts to contact Energie Future have been unsuccessful.

Like usual the Greens come up with all the negatives but never with the positives. Here is a company looking for gas under the sea bed and all the Greens are worries about the bloody whales. They keep telling us that the whales are very inteligent mamals and I a sure when the work starts they will aviod the area. One must ask the most important question who is the most important item on this planet the whales or the survival of the humn race . Think about it

Like usual the rabid right cannot see anything except potential profit. One must indeed ask the most important question. What is more important, short term profit for the greedy few, or long term survival of species and the resultant bio-diversity? Profits are fleeting, extinction is forever. Where are the profits now from the extinction of the Tasmanian tiger? Some farmers may have profited then, those profits are now as invisible as the tiger itself. Try a long term view.

The Greens would have more credibility if they stoped the population growth. If not then they should look for balance between human needs and preservation of nature. At the moment (sadly)there is no way we can stop what we are doing. So they can yell as much as they like and KRudd can charge us heaps for carbon , there is no solution. We have to eat boys. Have you seen the termites do damage to a house? More termites more damage. Think of it

The greens are loving life right now! For years we ignored them, (i still do but thats my opinion) its just now the popular thing to do to support them. When they have Krudd on board, they can't lose. I bet all the people at the protest drove there in their CARS!!!!!!!!! Hypocrisy????

lol happy camper, you can bet on it..thats the stupidity of all this...they protest a source of energy humans need..while they drive their cars, use their air cons, heaters, spa baths etc etc...perhaps if we all went back to living in caves they would be happy...or perhaps they would be the first ones whining. Wonder how Bob and Peter would go without their excesses and modern day creature comforts.

Hehehe, when i first busted out from HOME, i ended up running around protesting with Greenpeace( 15-17)..yes Everyone drove..usually in brokren hack cars using oil @ 3:1 fuel. They all had homes, most with Tassie Oak Kitchens, polished floorboarsds etc etc. Read awhile back about a house made of Oil by products(plastics). Almost burnproof(1200.c req), and was modular. The greens knocked it on the head because if it did burn( IF), it would release toxins. Ha ha They're a Joke!.

So any Greens support is just because they are popular??? Thats disingenuous. Coulkd it be that they are supported because people are seeing the sense behind their policies. They are quite simply the only political party to show a growth in their support base. And not only in Australia. You can ignore what you like, they are obviously not going away because your head is in the sand.

I've always been puzzled as to why the Greens major support base has always been in the cities. Its almost as though the ditzy doctor's wives and the inner city ferals vote for them as a way of purging a guilty conscience. They couldn't possibly bring themselves to actually LIVE in the bush, or refrain from taking long haul flights to Vaile every winter, so voting Green is really just an empty gesture designed to make them feel better about themselves without actually having to do anything.

Quite right Mick, the reason behind this growth is obvious, Global warming indoctrination. Certainly it has nothing to do here with their brillance now is it? Pull the wool over the eyes and it's quite strange what lenghts people will go to. Perhaps on the bright side someone may enter the party that actually has some spine, Inclination to achieve more than re- election, knowledge of GREEN ISSUES, not wagon hopping? I have Doubts though.

There's a number of things in The Green's favor.. Australia has largely a wonderful environment, much of which is what brings us in the tourism dollar, Aussie's generally love nature and the beach, there's just one Australia and just one planet, and the mindset in Australia and much of the world is generally that greed is evil. In addition, the mining industry in Australia has a chequered history as far as doing the right thing and keeping their promises. Leopard's don't change their spots.

What Greens party? They don't really exist. They are just some left wing unwashed yobbos, who are actually an extension of the Labor party. These idiots will do anything to stop progress, all in the name of 'Eco' whatever. I bet the real reason that the north west rail ink is being scrapped, is because some greeny has found a six legged blue and red spotted frog which may be endangered.

Paul H, Penrith, "What Greens party? They don't really exist. They are just some left wing unwashed yobbos, who are actually an extension of the Labor party." Yeah, and the Libs are just a front for One Nation.

Maybe if you had listened to some of the greenies in the last 20 years we wouldnt have a dying river system. Learn from history. You cant eat money.

Underground Coal Gasification has to be carried out between 300 and 2000 metres below the surface of the seabed, where whales are not often found. The seabed is not disturbed by subsidence, vibration or emissions. Looks like Greenpeace has not done it's homework or is up to its usual mischief-making.
