Homebush V8 street race set to be announced

26/09/2008 4:50:00 PM.  |
V8 Supercars Australia are expected to announce on Monday the proposed Homebush street race will go ahead from next year.

V8 Supercar chairman Tony Cochrane has been pushing for a street race around the Sydney Olympic Park precinct to become a permanent finale for the championship but has been waiting for the plan to be approved by the NSW government.

V8 Supercars will hold a press conference at ANZ Stadium on Monday to make the "special announcement".

Cochrane said the three-day event, expected to be held for the first time in December next year, would cost $13 million annually but V8 Supercars Australia would foot most of the bill.

He expected the race would draw crowds of up to 100,000 international and domestic spectators to Sydney but refuted claims the event would be environmentally irresponsible.

"Structural changes to the Olympic venue will be minimal - three median strips will need to be ripped out - and for every tree that is uprooted three will be planted," Cochrane said in response to disgruntled environment groups.

Cochrane also estimated the event would inject between $22 and $30 million into the state's economy.

Sydney faced the possibility of being without a V8 Supercar event with Eastern Creek ruled unfit and Oran Park in Sydney's south-west to close down after hosting this year's season finale.

Never mind the poor V8 supercars not having a place in Sydney - Sydney faces the possibility of having the character of it's best urban sports parkland messed up by the narrow interests of the V8 supercar organisers aided by this sham State government. Both have no business driving over the top of SOPA, local residents and others who know that Olympic Park is many things to many people but was NEVER meant to be a racetrack. If this event goes ahead, it will certainly be a failure.

What a fantastic event it will be. Excellent location to public transport, accomodation and exhibition and convention areas that go with the race. If you live in the area and you can't put up with a week of minor inconvience, to bad. You should be more concerned with living near a maximum secuity prison at Silverwater? Stop your whinging.

Olympic park is not a place for a race track. Why won't the state government invest in the current race track we do have which is only 10K up the road at Eastern Creek? That's right, this government has no common sense what so ever. This event will be more than a 1week inconvience. I'm sure roads will be closed for weeks before and after the event. Why don't we hold the race in the Smith;s neighbourhood. I'm sure they won't mind! It's a great event right!

The main point about the V8's is that it is a professional sport (read business) that is having difficulties with attracting a audience (not what the sponsors want to see), well either change the product so that the audience is attracted, or, let the business run its course (fail), the NSW Govt. (or any Govt.) should not be propping up any buisiness. What has been presented to the NSW Govt. is a gold plated turd, no matter how much you polish it, it is still a turd.
