The third buyback of water to help revive the Murray-Darling Basin will start on October 7, the federal government says.
Water Minister Penny Wong said the next tender would be for water from the southern areas of the basin and open for willing sellers of water entitlements.
"Water purchased for the southern basin will boost the overall health of rivers and wetlands that are extremely stressed after years of over-allocation, drought and climate change," Senator Wong said in a statement today.
The southern buyback will be open to sellers of water entitlements from the SA and Victorian Murray Darling Basin as well as the Murray, Murrumbidgee, Lachlan and Lower Darling rivers in NSW.
The government has already announced tenders for the northern basin.
