The man who could be our next Prime Minister has admitted to once smoking marijuana.

In a candid interview on ABC TV’s Q&A program, Liberal leader Malcolm Turnbull revealed to the nation that he had used drugs in the past.

"Yes, I have smoked pot,” Mr Turnbull said.

But he went on to say that the seriousness of drugs wasn't promoted during his childhood, describing it as a mistake.

“It is a serious question, and it’s a serious issue, and yes I have smoked pot…

"I think most well not most, many people have, it was a mistake to do so."

Mr Turnbull smiled throughout the interview, laughing off remarks that he had made history by becoming the first Liberal leader to admit to smoking marijuana.

He also talked about how he liked dogs better than cats, and also his run-ins with Kerry Packer.

"We did have a collision, but the fact of the matter is he started it."

Big F***ing deal. So what, name me one person who hasn't tried pot or worse? I would be more wary of someone who said they hadn't because they would be just bs'ing. More disturbing to me is the ear wax indulgence Mr Rudd had.

What the hell ? I thought Malcolm Turnbull had enough brains than to smoke drugs when he was younger. What is with people ? Why the hell are drugs and alcohol needed ? Is it that people are to dumb to follow their own way and are easily led by other losers ? Wake up all you morons ! Disappointing to say the least, Malcolm ! He needs a good smack to the side of the head and so do the rest of the losers who take illegal drugs !

Malcolm, whether you smoked pot to not isn't the real question. The real questions are, did you inhale and did you have sexual relations with that woman??

At least he admitted it.Going by his success and quick thinking now, he didn't do it for long.

Great article, you left out the political questions and the policy questions..and reported on the 2 things he spoke briefly on..the show ran 50 mins, these two things took about 4 mins total...great reporting Livenews !!

Ask all the politicians and you won't be surprised what their answer will be - the majority of them do it and have done it - it was that era - stupid as it was and still is!

Malcolm comes across as a very honest person that I strongly believe would make a fantastic Prime Minister. I bet half of Cambria has tried it at some stage of their life.

He also made strong comment not to do it, he pointed out they didnt have the information available about the serious effects of smoking marijuana, now they do. He also said it was a stupid thing to do and marijuana was very dangerous. As he pointed out it is a question that is always asked. The program spent no more than 5 mins on the issues in this article...poor reporting on a 50 min program Livenews.

Calm down Susan. Considering that although he charmed the crowd, he didn't really make any revelations about anything else last night, I can see why the media is focusing on Turnbull's not-so-controversial marijuana confession. Hopefully his frank announcement will end this kind of thing as an issue once and for all.

I think he charmed them the same as Rudd did Frank. He did reveal a little more about HIH and the subsequent Commission, his views on HECS, his views on the Republic, also about our financial institutions and his bipartisan offer to Mr Rudd...also the 4 corners program Tony Jones wife did on him, his dealings with Packer...his side of the coin. All in all just a few other items besides marijuana.

Hang on, I've just heard Lindsay Tanner say he smoked pot too! No wonder everyone is acting so silly in question time these days. At least we've found something both parties can agree on.

I dont think it is a big deal. He said he did it. Good on him for saying it. He said he regretted it. Another tick. Does not make him a bad person or negate his current intelligence or leadership ability. Proporiotnal to the whole interview though it was a nothing. I thought it was an impressive and as far as politicians go a reasonably candid interview. I am actually amazed that he got a whole 50 mins to himself in an intimate show like Q and A on a channel like ABC which usually leans left.

Maybe at the start of question time they could do away with the praying and get a big peace pipe going. All get really bent and make some decent decisions for a change. Then again they might blow their minds and start rambling on like Henderson.

hahaha Mark Sinclair,MAYBE thats what henderson has growing in his vegi garden eh....NOW that explains everything

Posted by: Dennis Smith, Syd

The only Vegetables Henderson would grow in his vegie patch are other Hendersons. If you haven't heard of them they are a very bitter prune like fruit that only grows on the far left hand branch of any tree.
