Liberal Party leadership was a poisoned chalice: Brendan Nelson

28/09/2008 8:58:00 AM.  | Amie Meehan

Dumped Opposition leader Brenda Nelson has singled out former colleague Tony Abbott as being partly responsible for his downfall.

Dr Nelson is refusing to rule out a future comeback, but insists Malcolm Turnbull is doing well in the polls.

And he's told the ABC, Mr Abbott's comments this year about a Peter Costello comeback destabilised his leadership.

“Well certainly Tony made those sort of comments and they weren’t particularly helpful.”

Dr Nelson also admitted leadership of the Liberal Party after its 2007 defeat was a poisoned chalice.

Dr Nelson was defeated by three votes earlier this month by Malcolm Turnbull, after calling for a leadership spill to end speculation about his position.

He's told the ABC he believed he could lead the party to the next election.

Doh! Brengun has only realized this now and he wants to be Prime Minister. It's funny, when Brengun speaks Malcontent seems like a good choice but when Malcontent speaks Brengun looks good. The fact is that the Libs have no viable leadership contenders, and anyone who trusted Tony Abbott would be a fool. Never forget his role and dishonesty in the Cypher affair. Great Alias, like Alia in the AWB affair.

Dr Nelson. You don't have to blame yourself . It would be impossible for any new leader after the election loss to become super popular. Peaople still had and have hopes that our new "masaya" is going to lead us to prommised land. They frightened people so much with milions worth union led compain abou work choices that after that you had no chance. Keep you head high get on front bench and make sure "milky bar kid"does not do too much damage before he also get stabed Gillard and chucked out

As we should never forget Rudds role in the Stein affair...We wont forget Swan dumb performanc in parliament last week either , screaming and hissing at Turnbull with his pitbul Gillard, and then using Turnbulls package to invest in the mortgage market...pretend politicians, just as their leader Rudd is.
