Man charged over Sydney fire

A man's been charged with possessing explosives after he was dramatically rescued from his burning home.

The fire in the Woollahra unit block on Edgecliffe Road yesterday, forced the evacuation of nearby residents and the closure of several streets with the counter-terrorism unit and the bomb squad brought in to investigate.

George Kharmo from police headquarters says the 54-year-old's been under police guard after detectives uncovered chemicals in his burnt out apartment.

“The man was released from St Vincent’s hospital last night and was taken to King’s Cross police station.”

“He was charged with possession of explosives with intent to destroy,” he said.

“He’s been refused bail and is due to appear at Parramatta local court today.”
