Clean power developer Carnegie Corporation says more than a third of Australia's base-load power needs could be economically generated by wave technology.

A report commissioned by the company says Australia has a potential wave energy resource four times the size of our total installed power generation capacity.

Carnegie says the report supports its view that Australia has the world's best wave energy resource.

Managing director Michael Ottaviano says machines anchored to the sea floor that move with the motion of passing waves and can be used to pump seawater ashore where it can drive hydroelectric turbines to generate electricity.

Mr Ottaviano says around 35 per cent of Australia's current power needs could be met by harnessing wave energy.

That sounds interesting, there's no shortage of waves of Sydney's coast and they're free.

so how much will it cost, and how much damage is it going to do to the marine environment?

It can't do too much more damage than the discharge of concentrated salt water from the desal plant or several decades of raw poo that was pumped out of Sydney's sewage treatment plants.

It's happening already: http://www.rise.org.au/info/Tech/wave/index.html and may be more afloat: http://www.abbaustralia.com.au/cawp/seitp202/2da4e8711f04ede6832572fa0027e43c.aspx but whilst ships might manage to stay clear, what about whales that drag shark nets along with them and as for % of base load, just another drop in the ocean, not to mention manufacturing/maintenance emissions output/generation emissions ratio.
