Thousands of Sydney homes blacked out this morning

29/09/2008 6:34:00 AM.  | Laura Tunstall
Power has been restored in around 1,000 homes on Sydney's lower north shore after a major blackout this morning.

The blackout has affected several suburbs including North Sydney, Cammeray, St Leonards, Artarmon and Crows Nest since four o'clock this morning.

Traffic lights are out and the fire brigade responded to a resident trapped in a lift at McMahon’s Point.

Some office buildings are also affected with electric doors unable to be opened.

Energy Australia says one of its major power lines which supplies TWO sub stations at North Sydney and Gore Hill is down.

Kylie Yates from Energy Australia has told 2GB’s Alan Jones they're slowly re-connecting affected homes and businesses.

“People who’ve got their power back are people who live in Kirribilli, Waverton, Milson’s Point, Wollstonecraft, and parts of North Sydney.

“We’ve also restored power to Royal North Shore hospital – our engineers were able to re-route the power supply from other parts of our network.”

While I can sympathise that it's a bit inconvenient for people when the power is off for a while why on EARTH is it in Google top stories? All over the country power blackouts occur all the time and hardly rate a mention yet when it's SYDNEY OMG! It's suddenly really important that people couldn't boil their morning cuppa or get lifts to function. Sometimes this Sydney-centricity gets very tiresome but at least you didn't dedicate as much space to quotes from whinging sydney-siders as others.

Whilst, I can appreciate the response above, you have to sympathize with all that loss of business this morning. I work for a prominent company in St Leonards, and at 10am (when no power was reinstated) a call was made to all staff waiting at the front office to go home....this is extremely unproductive....My company's loss from this morning could well be in the $00,000's and as such someone within EA should be answerable for any such hickup....It wasn't a hot day, this shouldn't have happened

Ask Delemma and the new Premier of the failed NSW Labor Government, why this has happened. Get used to it. This was predicted a few years ago when a high level study was done on the NSW electricity system by a leading European expert. They had failed to maintain the system, and they were told then that if they did not spend, and stopped milking the power companies and saddling them with debt then NSW would get brown outs. Welcome to the 3rd World. More to come.
