Beached whale euthanised with explosives

30/09/2008 8:29:00 PM.  |

West Australian environment officers have used explosives to euthanise a juvenile humpback whale stranded on a beach near Jurien Bay.

The 15-tonne juvenile was first spotted rolling on a reef last Thursday and then became beached 1km south of Jurien Bay in the state's mid-west region.

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) had speculated the whale was chronically ill.

The department acknowledged calls to push the whale back out to sea to give it a chance to survive.

But DEC Senior Wildlife Officer Doug Coughran said the whale was too ill and weak to move, and any such operation would have only prolonged its suffering.

"The animal is 10.5m long and weighs an estimated 15 tonnes," Mr Coughran said.

"Humpbacks rarely strand and do so only if they have serious health issues."

The whale was killed by explosives detonated near its brain. It will be buried at the site.

Why is Euthanasia illegal for people, but rushed into with whales. Whales die, everyday, somewhere, iy is part of the life cycle, this sort of response is frankly pathetic.

I don't think it is illegal in the Middle East, you could move there.

It sounds a pretty brutal way to put the poor thing to sleep, but I bet the Whale didn't feel anything. Poor "little" bugger. :(

I agree with you, Graeme. Euthanasia should be legal for people. I would use it on all people who commit their second felonious crime that did not include murder, rape, kidnapping etc etc. Those I would euthanize right after the trial. I do not believe in ethnic cleansing. But, I am a proponest of social cleansing. And, for the life of me, i can not understand why more people aren't with me on this idea. We aren't made less human by ridding ourselves of those who will not live in harmony.

Pithy; to be PC; we would need to call this "Retro-Active Contraception". The word Euthanasia should be saved for those terminally sick; to share the word Euthanasia with criminals would take away some of their dignity. I do agree whole heartedly with you in principle; a 22 between the eyes is cheaper than a gaol sentence and you can guarantee they won;t re offend..

When this beauty went up; I bet the Japs were all gathering aorund to gather shrapnel pieces of Whale samples for their "Research"...Not. Hey; now here is a novel way to irradicate the illegal Japanese whalers. Fill the whales up with a nuke or the like; when those whalers get that sucker on the boat.....Boom. It gives a new light to the phrase Suicide Bomber; and would be less painful than how the Japs treat them on the deck.
