Pass bailout or risk recession, Costello warns

1/10/2008 7:49:00 PM.  | Joel Labi

Former treasurer Peter Costello says the US congress must pass the US$700 billion Wall Street bail out package, when its voted on this week for a second time.

The Australian stock market rebounded today, after investor confidence was boosted by the prospect of a rescue package being passed.

Mr Costello has told 2GB Philip Clark the stability of the global financial market relies upon the deal.

"That package will have to go through, and I believe a package will go through, because if you were to let this go unaddressed then you could actually have some kind of very deep recession which would cost everybody their jobs."

"But I think the (US) Congress will insist on conditions."

Mr Costello has said our banks and institutions are doing extremely well weathering the storm, but he would still like to be in government to help out.

"I'd prefer to still be in government. It's a time of financial instability but as a treasurer that's the time you really get going."

Undoubtedly, the greatest treasurer Australia has ever had. Our loss and the world bank's gain... Does his new career mean that he will be issuing economic report cards for Australia?

Bolts & Desmond:"I'd prefer to still be in government. It's a time of financial instability but as a treasurer that's the time you really get going." Costellos words So what does that say about our Shadow Treasurer The Silent Julie Bishop???? Not a Great Deal Me Thinks

Keating - again your tactic of distraction. What's Bishop got to do with Costello or, more importantly, with the current financial crisis? It's the incompetent Swan who is in the driver seat now so whatever Bishop or Costello said doesn't deal with the current crisis. Unfortunately one can't really see Swan has any stuff to deal with the situation as his silence is really stunning (apart from telling us our banks are in good shape after bashing them for record profit & not passing rate cut!)

What does it say for the Goose, who is in government and treasurer (in name only)?

Dapto, quite frankly (if you did a survey now) I bet most Australians would prefer to have Costello at the Treasury helm than B1 & B2! Rudd & Swan are clueless. Forget the politics, at least Costello knew what he was doing...AND GOT ON AND DID IT! Turnbull is equally knowledgable and decisive - its just a pity that Rudd refuses to accept any bi-partisan help, which really goes to show how insecure Rudd is.
