Cannabis 'less harmful than drinking, smoking'

2/10/2008 8:57:00 PM.  | LIVENEWS.com with AAP
A British research group has called for a "serious rethink" of drug policy after finding that cannabis is less harmful than alcohol or tobacco, and that banning the drug has no impact on supply.

The Beckley Foundation, a charity group featuring senior British and international academics as its advisors, said outlawing cannabis only acted to turn users into criminals.

"Although cannabis can have a negative impact on health, including mental health, in terms of relative harms it is considerably less harmful than alcohol or tobacco," the report by the Foundation's Global Cannabis Commission said.

"Many of the harms associated with cannabis use are the result of prohibition itself, particularly the social harms arising from arrest and imprisonment," it said.

"It is only through a regulated market that we can better protect young people from the ever more potent forms of dope."

The report comes as the British government pushes for cannabis to be re-classified as a Class B drug – alongside other illegal drugs such as amphetamines – rather than the less series Class C grading.

Well I know it isnt an Narcotic, so therefore it shouldn't come under the narcotics penalty ? Dont know if Legalising will do much good. Perhaps Licensing in some way or another. That wont cure the youth issues though but then neither will legalising as surely and Age req. would accompany it? Strange the listing hasnt been reset yrs ago when one considers the reason it was banned in the first place? Which ever way its looked at, nothing is working now, perhaps try something?

These findings are what anti-prohibitionists have been saying all along. We have a failure to communicate with our governments for one reason only. There's a lot of money, jobs, and power to be lost if cannabis is legalized. So, our governments refuse to represent the majority of the people, who now support cannabis legalization. This proves that they see themselves as our Lords and we are the peasants. Yet, it's strange that our governments don't see the profit potential of taxed cannabis.

Silly Brit. Language is dynamic. If we could ask King Henry or King George, they'd say YOU had butchered the English language. The Aussie dialect is cool BTW. Thanks LIVENEWS for covering the Beckley Foundation report.
