Credit crisis won't delay carbon cut: Wong

2/10/2008 4:10:00 PM.  | AAP
The global economic meltdown is not cause to put off the start of an emissions trading scheme, Climate Change Minister Penny Wong said today.

Senator Wong said Australia had delayed taking action on climate change for long enough, and business would benefit from carbon certainty by introducing a trading scheme sooner rather than later.

"We've always said we will approach our response to climate change in an economically sustainable fashion, and we will consider very carefully the economic modelling and other economic data when determining our path forward in relation to the carbon pollution reduction scheme," Senator Wong told reporters in Melbourne.

She would not indicate whether the financial crisis warranted a softer start to an ETS, saying only that the government would make its decision on a mid-term target range for emissions cuts at the end of the year.

Australia's top climate adviser Ross Garnaut released his final report this week, urging the government to commit to a deep, fast cut in greenhouse emissions, but only if other countries do the same.

Prof Garnaut recommended Australia slash emissions by 25 per cent by 2020, providing the world forges a tough climate pact.

"I think Professor Garnaut's report has confirmed what we've been saying ... really confirmed the scale of the challenge and the government's very aware of that," Senator Wong said.

"So we'll take into account Professor Garnaut's report, the economic modelling which, as I said will be released this month, as well as our consultations with business and industry."

Has Penny lost all her cents. She seems intent in taking a cut out of your pay packet one way or another. I'm sure that Kevin747 and his hollowmen will soon find a way to save face for the turnaround and get Penny of the wong track and back into the land of reality.

Penny Wong is saying. We will do it and that's that. Like it or lump it. Labor will do us harm yet , but not till after the next ellection. Convice us 100% that ETS is a right way to go Ms Wong and then let us do it. This is just being pig headed.

What Ross Garnaut failed to mention is the fact that -even if we, locally, reduced our greenhouse emissions to zero-we would still be contributing to a Global increase by Countries using our exported Coal. Given that Kevin Rudd commissioned Ross Garnaut to make his reports it is reasonable to assume that he would have set the terms of reference one of the terms of reference would have been Global Participation in greenhouse gas reduction. In the election campaign Kevin Rudd stated that he was going to go ahead with his reduction targets, regardless of what other Countries did and that is why he was going to sign Kyoto-even though the US had not signed and India and China were not required to do anything under Kyoto.Mr Rudd has misled the Australian public to score political points over the Coalition and to garner Green preferences. Having succeeded with this tactic his advisor now seems to be agreeing with the Coalition stance-World cooperation.

Des this is exactly what Nelson tried to put forward when the media kept blitzing him about agreeing with wongs policy. They tore him up over that. This Govt doesnt care if we pay more for everything, or ruin our economy when we quite possibly might be in a recession anyway soon. They have their new religion to follow, no matter what anyone says, and they dont care that we alone wont make a scrap of difference. I wonder how much Garnauts report cost us .

Is Wong becoming the Queen of bottom liners - ""So we'll take into account ......" is a great get out of that line but sadly she does not realise that ironically an economic downturn could be double jeopardy of pleasant nature for the targets - a Carbon Trading Scheme with additional costs and economic downturn both leading to drops in consumption and if that doesn't offset the emission increases of extra population the recession causing more of them to be unemployed sure will.

"Credit Crisis wont Delay Carbon Cut." " Our Carbon Cuts wont delay the choking of the Earth either", but that doesnt seem to worry them? As it stands, we will cut back on everything anyway as we're heading into the BIGGEST financial crunch in History. What with the way companies have been financed with "DEBT", it's hard to pick which ones will make it out the other side.
