Girl 'destroyed' after 'parent's worst nightmare'

2/10/2008 8:12:00 PM.  | Dominic Brock
A man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl after climbing in through her bedroom window, in what a judge described as a “parent’s worst nightmare”.

Victoria’s County Court was told Stephen Maurice, 32, removed the fly-screen of the girl’s window at 4am before sexually assaulting her in bed.

Judge Paul Lacava described the crime as “about as serious as it gets”.

“It is every parent’s worst nightmare,’’ he said.

Maurice lived only 50 meters down the road from the girl and her family.

He has pleaded guilty to sexual penetration of a child and aggravated burglary, and will be sentenced next week.

In a victim impact statement, the court was told the girl and her sister now sleep with their parents every night, and that the family were living a “nightmare with no end”.

The girl is now afraid of crowds or of being without her parents, with her father telling the court Maurice had “destroyed” his daughter.

“I am no longer the family protector. Night time has become something to fear. The only reprieve is to light up the house like a Christmas tree,’’ he said.

I am told that pedophilia is a sickness. Even so, I think that even sick people are accountable. I hope the perpetrator is never released from whatever institution they are locked in. As for the girl and her family, there can be a future and I hope they find it.

What particularly infuriates me is that there will be some psychiatrist who will declare this man is insane, or even if convicted there is possibiliy he doesn't serve his entire sentence. Society has a right to protect itself and very harshly punish such behaviour. Why in today world, the victims suffering is considered less important ?

Castrate him and lock him up till he turns 70 years old. The girl and her family will be in my prayers. May they find strength, courage and love to ovecome this horrible deed of a monster.

i beleive that, as a parent, all kiddy fiddlers should be given the death sentance because they will not or cannot be trusted as they will always reoffend. we as a community should rise up and demand that people like these should not be allowed in our society. people like dennis'the mennis' ferguson should be put to death for what they have done. the goernment is all to worried about protecting the guilty and not the innocence of childhood.

The death penalty is barbaric, it is proven not to have a deterrent effect on criminal or deviant behaviour, and it is clear that wherever it is used, innocent people are killed by the State, which has to be one of the most abhorrent forms of murder imaginable. This story involves one of the very rare cases of sexual assault of a child occuring outside of the immediate and extended family, where most of the offending happens. For every Ferguson, there are a 1000 that look like your neighbour.

Darren Coward; I defy you to tell me how if a preditor is put to death; he will offend again. The trouble with do gooders like you; is you are twisting why people are put in gaol. You are sent to gaol as a punishment for your crime; not as rehabilitation.Therapy classes are for rehablilitation. It is also proven that EVERY child molester WILL re offend; or atleast try to. The risk is far too great. They need to be put to death for our children's sake. Then people like you bag Hinch for naming them.

Point me to the evidence that you rely on. Try to avoid emotive arguments and concentrate on my points. Please explain how you revive and innocent person who has bene killed by the State through us of the death penalty. Go to google and type in 'innocence project' and have a poke around at how often the police fudge up the evidence, or just get it wrong, and innocent people are killed. If jail is just for punishment, and no effort is made at rehabilitation, then recidivism really is inevitable.
