The balaclava-clad gunman who shot Melbourne underworld figure Lewis Moran will likely receive a life prison sentence, a court has heard.
Evangelos Goussis, 41, of Geelong, stormed into a packed Brunswick Club in March 2004, chased Moran through the poker machines area and shot him as he cowered in a corner.
Victorian Supreme Court Justice Betty King today asked Goussis' lawyer Stephen Shirrefs, SC, to persuade her why the former Olympic boxing squad member should ever leave prison.
Mr Shirrefs said at Goussis' presentence hearing he was in a different category of offenders to criminals who had received life without parole.
He said Goussis was in the third line of organisation for the murder.
Prosecutor Paul D'Arcy said the nature of the killing was such that it was open for Justice King not to fix a non-parole period.
Outside court, Moran's widow Judy said Goussis did not deserve to ever walk free from prison.
"I think Goussis needs to be locked away for ever and people like him," Mrs Moran said.
