Mardi Gras gets taxpayer boost, but Events NSW won't say how much

Events NSW is refusing to say how much of funding boost Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has received from taxpayers.

The new government body NSW has been in negotiations with Mardi Gras organisers since its establishment in September last year.

Events NSW chief Geoff Parmenter has told 2GB’s Chris Smith it's not Nathan Rees who signed off on it but Morris Iemma.

“This actual deal was done before the current premier took over,” he said.

New Mardi Gras chairman David Imrie said the strategy included plans for more international and national float participation and securing existing and new media broadcasting opportunities.

"Parade, Fair Day and an enhanced arts and cultural festival will be pillars of a new, self-sustaining, creative approach focused on improving participation, content and production values," Mr Imrie said.

Until now, the event has relied on money raised from the Mardi Gras Party and Sleaze Ball and sponsorship.

The event overcame financial difficulties in 2002, when organisers were forced into voluntary administration, to post a $483,695 profit this year.

Mardi Gras chief executive Anna McInerney said the event attracted interstate and international visitors.

"It's time to drive even greater national and international recognition of Mardi Gras and its vibrant, energetic expression of our Aussie larrikin personality," Ms McInerney said.

"The envy of other global cities, this unique, Australian tradition has endeared its way into the heart of the city and continues to deliver economic and marketing returns for NSW."

Good on you Rees, you have shown yourself up as being yet a political pandering lefty. As if we need to see OUR money , NOT YOURS, going towards this celebration in sexually perversity and the ever growing sexual ghettoization in the CDB. My views aside Rees,in your short time as Premier you have offered millions of OUR money for V8 racing, and hunting down mythical Black Panthers but not 1 cent on urgent infrastructure and emergency services. Get ready for a very short term in Government mate.

Seems right doesnt it? First NSW has the money waster called WYD. So obviously after that the NSW guv ( replacement) HAs to prop up the Prissies too. I guess they have to have this, the extra money, will of course boost spending blah blah blah....Do the IDiots running NSW own a brain between them? Cant get cash for transport but can prop up any old shindig. THE gay/lesbian community should fund their little mardi gras fromtheir OWN pockets.

$30 mill for V8's and $30 mill for the Gay Mardi Gras. I wonder if one of Sydney's hospitals could manage to get some tangible improvements in their health care with $60 mill? Nathan Rees, I am beginning to think you are as big a tool as Premier, as Morry was.

Ben Riviera, the short answer is NONE. But the question begs asking if it is going so well why inject taxpayers' funds at all? With a profit like that I doubt the event needs any injection of funds. The LGBT community should keep it a private concern and not allow the government to stuff it up, which they will if involved.
