NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione says the taser guns being rolled out across NSW will contain built-in cameras to ensure that their use is appropriate.
Commissioner Scipione says strict procedures will be followed as the stun guns are rolled out across the State.
The tasers will only be issued to two senior officers, the supervising sergeant and duty officer at each local area command.
Commissioner Scipione has told 2GB’s Ray Hadley, there's a lot to consider before a taser is used.
“They can’t be used on individuals that are compliant or non-threatening – that’s a given,” he said.
“They can’t be used as a punishment or in retaliation.”
But Shadow Police Minister Mike Gallacher says the public is being deceived, if they think
"The tasers are going to be issued to supervisors," he said.
Not every police car in New South Wales will have immediate, direct access to a taser in the event that they need one. They'll have to wait for the supervisor... who will be behind a desk, instead of in a police vehicle."
