An 83-year-old pensioner has described his terrifying ordeal after being bashed for just 50 cents.
Ernest Evans, a World War II veteran, was sitting outside a charity shop when he was approached by a man who asked for fifty cents.
When Mr Evans refused the man allegedly walked away, later returning to punch him in the head without saying a word, sending the veteran sprawling into the gutter.
When Mr Evans' wife Una tried to defend her husband, the attacker allegedly told her: "Do not get involved or you will get what he is getting."
Mrs Evans said the attacker's girlfriend then pushed her back, saying, "That man tried to hit us with his walking stick."
Kristopher Cowie, 30, and his girlfriend Tracey Prater, 29, were arrested on Wednesday after witnesses identified them to police.
Mr Cowie was released on bail today, despite already being on bail for other offences.
Ms Prater was bailed by police after the incident.
Mr Evans has told 2GB's Philip Clark his attacker punched him unexpectedly, sending him reeling over the back of the chair.
"He went down and spoke to a woman about 20 yards away, then he came back up past me and just went bang!
"I went flying over the back of the chair onto the ground."
