Gillard: Henson's visit sends a shudder down the spine

5/10/2008 3:48:00 PM.  | AAP
Federal Education Minister Julia Gillard says allowing a photographer to scout out a primary school playground for nude models would send a shudder down people's spines.

Photographer Bill Henson, whose portraits of naked teenagers sparked outrage earlier this year, says he checked out a Melbourne primary school, accompanied by the principal, to find models for his work.

Ms Gillard said today she was shocked by the revelation when it came out yesterday.

"To find out now that someone has been allowed to go into a school to look at children I think would send a shudder through people's spines," Ms Gillard told the Nine Network.

She said no one should be on school grounds unless they were there for a legitimate purpose relating to the education of young people.
The Victorian Government has announced an investigation into the incident.

Ms Gillard said child protection was primarily a matter for the states and did not indicate the federal government would be taking action over the incident, although she said governments were working on a national child protection framework.

She criticised Henson's nude photographs, which were removed from an art gallery earlier this year but later returned.

"I found the images disturbing, I was very concerned about them," she said.

Ms Gillard sought to attack Federal Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull over comments he made earlier in the year in relation to the Henson issue, in defence of artistic freedom.

"I also note the leader of the opposition seems to have changed his mind from earlier this year on this matter, earlier this year he was more in the artistic freedom camp, saying he himself owned Henson works," she said.

"But I'm glad to see that he has joined with the government on this occasion to say that it is a disturbing incident."

Wish they would stop running off at the mouth & bloody well do something. If the DPP is a dead $%$# then replace them with someone who has some morals & the courage to act. This is just so wrong that it defies any common decency or protection from the most vulnerable. Even the parents should not have the right to tell their child to take their pants off so some grubby deviat can take photos. How low can society plummet before someone finally says ----ENOUGH.For Gods sake they're only little kids.

oh please julie, give me a break, since 1961 the education of australian school kids has been on one long downward curve, to the point that in 2008, i ask the question, what education? cant read properly, cant write properly, no punctuation, no idea of word meaning, no sense of right or wrong, no respect of authority, especially schoolteachers, come on jules, come up with the goods, and dont you dare mention that B>S climate crap. that 's even taken over from the piltdown man, forget that one.

I also think Henson's trips to school appalling. Almost as much as when Gillard goes to school and has fawning staff tell children lies about what Gillard does and how the ALP works.

This makes me ill. It is nice to see those commenting so far havnt been attacked for believing this is the lowest act. I agree Diane, the literacy rates are appalling, a deliberate attempt to "dumb down" the children.A little like the "useful idiots" who defend these people. Sickening, this Principal should be sacked, and i could care less how long he has been there, he broke every rule he was entrusted to uphold.Protection of the children the first and most important. Gramsci's plan is winning

Please explain what evidence you rely upon to found your assertion that there is an agenda based on the thought of Gramsci which is being implemented anywhere in this country.

as far as i'm concerned there not much of a difference between gillard and henson, henson's a dirty old man trying recruit his next child for another pedophilic image, gillard goes into schools to indoctrinate children into having opinions they don't yet fully understand, personally i'd like to see a blanket ban on politicians and photographers of this nature from schools, kids are there to learn not moulded or exploited

Starts in the schools , then the churches , then the media...your obviously not familiar with him then Darren...infiltrating the education system, the churches, and the media....blurring the difference between right and wrong....anyway why am I explaining myself to you all the time, find out yourself Darren...you were, were you not, initially one of Hensons defenders ?....that rules out any explanation.

Susan, thanks for confirming the shallowness of your understanding of Gramsci's philosophy, with which I am familiar. I asked you for specifics because, as a theorist who built on Marx, it is my view that Gramsci would not find anything in modern Australian schooling which he would be likely to view as consistent with his thought. And I have not made any comment stating a position on Henson.

At every school I attended they were strict rules about visitors- they had to be family and have a reason or when I was a seniors we could have some friends come in for lunch but they always had to have a signed pass allowing them to be there and produce some form of ID when asked, never was a stranger allowed on the grounds so I find the fact he was allowed there incredibly wrong for safety issues not just because of why he was there. If he wanted to find them, place an ad in the paper.

On the contrary Darren, I understand Gramsci more than you might imagine. So did Nikita Kruschuv when he banged his shoe on the table and declared, "We shall destroy you from within". "America will be defeated without a single shot being fired". Infiltrate the churches, the media, and the schools...dumb them down, mould them, teachers pushing their political agenda's. Where the parent becomes irrelevant and the child becomes putty.Sad you believe their is only your version Darren. Some disagree

Susan, in my experience, you understand virtually nothing. These posts of your about Gramsci are really sad. They have the same paranoia flavour which infected the posts you made about me actually being soemone else, an assertion you are still too gutless to put yourself on the line for. Gramsci didn't want to dumb down anything, he advocated the production of intellectuals. Any evident 'dumbing down' is due to the capitalist project which uses marketing to render us all brain dead consumers.

I would expect you would see Gramsci from that side Darren. I wont sink to your level though and accuse you of knowing nothing, or that your comments are viewed through far left blinkers. Gramsci understood that Lenin didnt understand the people, and so set about a creating the far left liberal ideology of infiltration by stealth. I would not expect you to see his work from any view other than a liberal left. He advocated the production of liberal left intellects, and it worked for you.

Susan: Unfortunately you cannot preach to the already converted no matter how right you may be! Again it's a question of what they make of it in the end and it's their own opinion rather than looking at the facts before them!

My opinion of Hensons work was & is that its immoral but not pornographic. I get that artists push the envelope, but I do think we need laws to protect children so Henson doesn't do his type of work with kids. That being said I do not think he or any other "talent agency" should be allowed to wander around a school where my kids are. I am DISGUSTED to discover that this is supposedly routine. At our school, the kids have signed notes BEFORE they're allowed to meet anyone, inc sporting heros.

I really fail to see that Henson's stuff is not pornographic when the taking of pictures of these kids was so explicit and where their genitalia was exposed - if that's not pornographic then what is?? - I think some have only seen the milder shots and even those were open to interpretation with they were showing too much - considering that the internet is a open to anyone this was the point which was made and that the wrong types will be able to access these for their own gratification! The law needs to change as it always becomes a question of what you make of it otherwise - there's a clause currently protecting these people who think they can abuse the system and take it just one step further than they should be allowed.
