Taxpayers to pay for obese teenagers

5/10/2008 8:30:00 AM.  | Victoria Owens
Taxpayers will foot the bill for overweight teenagers to go under the knife for drastic weight loss surgery.

In a desperate bid to curb the childhood obesity epidemic, the government is injecting funds into Westmead Childrens' Hospital for gastric banding.

The $10,000 dollar procedure will be restricted to teenagers aged 14 and over.

Is this not typical of out of touch bureaucrats and politicians opting for easy solutions funded by taxpayers rather than getting a whip out and herding the fatties out of the fattening paddocks and even having them do forced marches to get there would be much more beneficial to the community, leaving medical services for the aged and needy most of whom may even have paid taxes.

And if the 'bureacrats and politicians' chose your policy, where do you think the money would come from to pay the whip-wielders and boot camp instructors? Tackling obesity and overweight at a young age is a wise investment. You avoid many times the expenditure in health costs later in the individual's life, and they are more likely to be productive for longer and pay the taxes that fund any form of government spending.

Typical of our Govt to find the easy way out. Why not Get them off their Collective A*** and have a go at doing something Harder then answering the Door for their PIZZA'S. Perhaps a change in Mum and DADs grocery shopping Practises may save some money from the Taxpayer. Perhaps tghy'll have a go at fixing my Fn shoulder so I can go back to work and HELP pay for this? Nah...tooo frikn smart to do that!! :(=(

We have obese children/adults in our family I listen to them give the "genetics" excuse etc...I KNOW its hard to lose weight, but look at their lifestyle & watch what they eat, its not hard to see why they're obese. There's a 1yr old who was given chocolate mudcake at 8mths - but according to the mother he has a healthy diet. He IS an obese kid in the making. Fix the parents not the kids....research in the US has shown gastric banding has serious consequences, it should be not be given to teens.

i just had a mental picture of dad and dave rudd, intently watching the fashion channel on fox, she/he's in, she/he's out, the mind boggles, and again i ask dad/dave rudd, is this before the recommandation of the committee review.?

i aggree concerned liberal, i see kids down at KFC having a meal as a snack. before they go home & have a meal. these kids are so overweight & their parents are the same. i could never put a child through this kind of surgery. i would rather put them on a healthy eating plan and exercise plan than surgery. but then i have been blessed with skinny kids. two who love healthy food. one who is anorexic. he will get there one day. for a treat we chop tonnes of fruit up and pig out in front of the tv

Exactly concerned Lib, and dc why do you need both whip wielders and instructors when you structure a marathon walk bootscamp to include roadside rubbish picking up, there being a drinks station every couple of kilometre, healthy food for self preparation a bit further a part and a tent to pitch at the end of each days walk, easily co-ordinated by some healthy retired people and all of those costs will be far less than what surgery will be so get your head out of the KFC bucket.

I'm not sure if you've really thought this through. The expense could be much more than you woud think at first blush. The pensioners would presumably want at least a little extra. There would have to be paramedics at hand (for heatstroke), all of the meals (presumably low calorie) would have to be paid for, strict skin cancer protocols would have to be in place, but the biggest hurdle would doubtless be the insurance, if you ever convinced anyone to have their kids working next to a highway....

One minute the poor old tax payer is going to foot the bill for obese kids,in the next breath this government is going to stamp out skinnies on the cat walk. When is this so called government going to get their priorities right.Aussies are hurting, with people losing their homes, pensioners are not far from starving, and the homeless situation is growing by the minute.Lets hope by the time the next election is due Rudd hasnt dribbled away our government surplus on such inane projects.

Carrow Sparrow, come on now you ain't as devoid of imagination and initiative as your mate Kevin are you, and I'm probably wasting my breath, but how about a bit of DIY and not thinking of the porkers being out in the midday sun kind of 30C+weather and they or their parents pay a fee for fresh veges and fruit to be in the esky food box and along with responsibility for stuff like that, they learn some road safety (and that was but an example btw) - you're a city slicker aren't you?
