Principal to face questioning over Bill Henson's talent scouting

The school principal who allegedly allowed controversial photographer Bill Henson into her school grounds seeking children to photograph, will speak with education department officials today.

Sue Knight was principal at St Kilda Park Primary School in winter last year when it is alleged she gave permission to Henson to enter school property.

Victoria's Department of Education Monday issued a statement saying it had commissioned an independent investigation into the incident, which would start Monday morning.

A department spokesman said no other information on who was conducting the investigation was immediately available.

Monday's statement said senior department staff would assist the investigation and meet with Ms Knight Monday morning.

Ms Knight is now principal at Coburg West Primary School, in Melbourne's north.

She was on Monday not available for comment.

The furore over Henson's visit to the school erupted this weekend, when a new book by journalist David Marr revealed the artist had been allowed into St Kilda Park Primary School and spotted two children he thought would be good models for his work.

One child, a boy, was later photographed after his parents were approached by the school on behalf of the artist, Fairfax Newspapers reported.

Henson this year sparked a blaze of controversy with his photos of nude children.

The Education Department said it had launched its investigation Monday at the request of Premier John Brumby and Education Minister Bronwyn Pike.

Ms Pike Monday said consent was the main issue.

"Children have no choice but to be in schools and we have to make sure that we offer them every single right to privacy and protection of their personal rights and that we don't allow them to be objectified or used for personal gain," Ms Pike told ABC Radio.

Meanwhile, David Marr, the author behind the book revealing Bill Henson's controversial method of finding models says that he doesn't see what the problem is.

"I don't see what the problem is so long as the protocols are followed and so long as it is the parents who decide," Marr told ABC Radio Monday.

"This is a man who at the time was regarded as an unimpeachable, leading artist in this country, being taken by a school principal into a playground and suddenly it is this monstrous horror."

"There's nothing unusual about artists going into schools, there's nothing unusual about casting agents for film and television going in there."

Marr, who is also a journalist, said there was a system of "talent spotting" in schools where people were allowed to look around for talent, without the prior consent of parents.

He defended Henson's selection of a boy during the playground visit, who was later photographed shirtless.

"The child was photographed with the full consent of his parents ... he was not photographed at the school."

"The boy was not photographed naked, he's got his shirt off."

The latest round of the Henson debate has led to a split between Marr and fellow Fairfax columnist Miranda Devine, who has Monday written a story criticising people she describes as apologists for Henson.

Marr took issue with Devine's comments.

"I'll be having a couple of words to Miranda face to face when I get back to Sydney," he said.

"Isn't she a charmer."

But, outspoken Senator Bill Heffernan has told 2GB’s Jason Morrison he will raise the incident in parliament because it breaches the trust parents place in their schools.

“You let this go through to the keeper, what’s the next stunt they’ll pull?” he asked.

“It gradually breaks down those years of innocence that our children have. The headmistress – or whoever it was [that gave permission] at that school – should get the sack.”

Nick: unfortunately; there is double standards in play here. There are people in the judicial system as well as the public; and this web site that seem to think it is ok to window shop. Looking is as much of a crime as touching. The principle will get off with a pat on the bum and told to be more discreet in future.

Marr, who is also a journalist, said there was a system of "talent spotting" in schools where people were allowed to look around for talent, without the prior consent of parents.....No one should be allowed to look around a school for "talent". It isnt a meat market, it is a SCHOOL yard !! Parents who want their child in that business can take them to the many agencies available. Schools are for learning , teaching, not for old men to roam looking for a child he wants to photograph nude.

dead right nick nothing was found wrong about this man, he may even take a leaf out of NRL and go to court---- it worries me heaps more that, released pedifiles often under assumed names are PLACED in accomodation close to schools----where are the comments then from rudd gillard and turmbull??? hundreds of children are being exploited under the IR laws --- where are the trio then with their lookalike policies.

mate, they're laughing behind our backs at us all, thats where. The fact that when they release a pedo and place them in the community, it's NEVER near their Homes or Schools says it all. Our Police Com's pr has just been through that with Us all in qld, over a freak recently released. " we have to put him somewhere", they said. When asked why not next door to you? " sorry, that wouldnt work" was spat back.

Enough is enough - the next round of pedophile defence will be modelled on Henson's 'sophisticated' view of the arts - whats the difference between Henson and pedophile lurking around schools and beaches taking photographs of young kids - not much except if you are in Victoria the school principle invites you in to trawl the school grounds for victims. However, since I lack the sophistication of the Victorian School Board I guess I can't call for this stupid, negligent Principle to be sacked.

"The boy was not photographed naked" he had his shirt off. That makes this okay? It is still sexualy sugestive. So why did't Hanson take a photo with boy's shirt on? Would not sell? You can come up with any exuses Mr Marr but it is still repulsive. If I took photos like that people would be calling for my head and call me a pedophile. But if I put title in front of my name "Artist" then I have a licence to be a creep? Hanson should go and try this in a Muslim country. See how far he'd get

So Happy, did you find the sight of the naked to the waist bogans beating up non-white people at Cronulla sexually suggestive?

Darren Carrow: You obviously like to see your stupid comments make some type of impact even when they have nothing to do with this article whatsoever - how does taking your shirt off at a beach have anything to do with photographs being taken of young kids in suggestive poses exposing their private parts - stop preaching hate in your comments as it is so very clear in your posts! Just for once try to stick to the subject of debate!

RS, I was perplexed by your statement that 'Hanson (sic) should go and try this in a Muslim country and see how far he gets'. I was having difficulty seeing the coneection with the topic of discussion, namely the tension between artistic freedom and child protection. Then I twigged that this was that bankrupt and confused argument again trying to draw comparisons between 'Aussie freedom' and what you ignorantly imagine as 'Muslim repression'. so now you get the Cronulla treatment, savvy?

Carrow: Henson (I must have pushed the wrong key but thanks for letting me know about my bigggggggg mistake) as for art and child protection this is what this issue is all about isn't it? I find your comments far more "perplexing" especially for someone who has no idea or knowledge about the subject because it seems if you read or listen to an interview (Marr's on this occasion) it must be obviously true-you're proven that beyond any doubt relating to talent scouting in schools and it appears you see it an automatic process and allowed to happen-go back to school you fool! Put up an argument on what you believe is right or wrong but don't go around placing your inane statements against others and then claim you have not stated a view! At no time have I seen your actual "personal view" on what you actually think about it but you attack others for saying what they think.Put up or shut up!

RS, rarely have so many words been used to say so little, in a way that makes so little sense. OK, I reckon Marr is spot on: this is a classic moral panic. Real fears held by people about child protection, especially in the age of the internet, have been conflated with 'phantom' fears about photography and art being used for sexual gratification by paedophiles. Reality has been abandoned and Henson demonised. The real problems are located far from the focus on this artist.
