Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has been labelled a terrorist at a rally for his Republican rival John McCain.

McCain was speaking at a rally in New Mexico when he asked the crown, "Who is Barack Obama?"

Immediately a supporter yelled out, "A terrorist," which seemed to delight the crowd but left McCain looking slightly startled.

Despite the disturbance the Republican nominee continued his speech, moving on to chasten the Democrats for launching an "angry barrage of insults".

Obama recently lashed out at McCain and his running mate for turning to "low-blow" personal attack in what he said was an effort to direct attention away from US economic crisis.

The angry backlash came after McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin accused Obama of consorting with terrorists in an attack on his ties in Chicago to former anti-Vietnam war militant William Ayers.

Palin's reference to a connection between Mr Ayers and Obama sparked a similarly angry reaction from her supporters.

"Now it turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," Palin said.

"And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,'" she continued.

"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.

The Democrat hit back with a new television spot hammering Republican John McCain for wanting to turn the page on the US economic crisis and resorting to political attacks only weeks out from the presidential election.

Hope they have Obama suited up with some good kevlar underwear, and that may not even stop some bastard getting to him, and if McCain had any ticker/balls he would be hosing that sort of comment right down as well as hosing Palin back to Alaska for starting it up.

McCain has been a gentleman, and Obama has gotten away with appalling smears. The truth is that Obama's friends are questionable. Obama's judgement is poor. Obama's record of decision making is poor. Obama's supporters do and say questionable things. Substitute Rudd for Obama and you will see the same. Obama looks like handsomely winning the presidency. I saw Obama's presidency described in a movie. Not the West Wing .. with McCain getting secretary of state .. but Babylon AD.

What a show of hypocrisy, to think they are indignant because McCain dares to tell the truth about some of Obama's connections, calling it gutter politics..what a laugh, after the smears they have been coming out with...Ask Obama about his conncetions to the Fannie and Freddie execs, even having them advising him...Now they find half of the donations to his Election campaign are being investigated..AGAIN. Some not quite legal individual contributions. McCain needs to tell Obama's real history.

Has anyone but me noticed that everytime these people voice their hatred and desire to destroy Obama they are the ones to get their own wish? For example: Pray for rain on Obama acceptance speech and a hurricane interferred with their convention. This is only one example; it is happening continually.

The simple facts are that Obama looks increasingly likely to win, so McCain is looking increasingly strident and desparate. One proposition can be backed by looking at all of the published polls, the second can be backed by merely looking.
