Vidmar: Rivaldo is not our focus

7/10/2008 2:50:00 PM.  |
Brazilian great Rivaldo won't be man marked by Adelaide United in tomorrow night's Asian Champions League semi-final, Reds coach Aurelio Vidmar says.

The 2002 World Cup winner headlines Uzbekistan's Bunyodkor outfit which has journeyed to Adelaide for the first leg of the semi-final at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Rivaldo signed a multi-million dollar contract to join the Uzbek side, coached by Brazilian legend Zico.

But Vidmar said Rivaldo would not receive special treatment from Adelaide players.

"We have never done that," Vidmar told reporters today.

"We know how much of a great player he is, but if you start focussing too much on one player, there are other players ... he takes pressure off other players.

"There certainly won't be anyone going out to man mark him.

"Whoever is in his vicinity when he has got the ball, obviously there has to be some pressure on the ball and on the man.

"That is the approach we are going to take with him."

Adelaide travels to Tashkent for the last leg of the semi-final on October 22.

The victor will play the winner of the other semi-final between Japanese clubs Urawa Red Diamonds and Gamba Osaka in the lucrative competition which offers a $1.6 million cheque for the champions.
