Talk to media and you’ll be excluded: Lapthornes threatened

The father of Britt Lapthorne says he's been threatened by an Australian Federal Police officer to stop talking to the media.

The 21-year-old was last seen on September 18, at nightclub in Dubrovnik.

Her father, Dale, flew to Dubrovnik where he has criticised the Australian authority’s action towards the case – he even described the AFP officer in Croatia as the “phantom officer”.

Dale has told 2GB’s Chris Smith he’s been warned by the AFP - if he continues to talk to the media he’ll be excluded.

“They actually told me that they’ll stop talking to me, and giving me updates – they didn’t give me an update yesterday, they just spent the whole time telling me that I’m hindering the investigation process by talking to the media.”

Meanwhile, Britt’s mother Elke has broken down in tears as she explained her "living hell".

Elke spoke at a media conference at the family's two-acre property north of Melbourne, describing the last few days as bizarre and surreal.

"Every day it gets worse and worse. Why hasn't Britt been found for heaven's sake?"

If this is true then it is extremely heartless. We cannot begin to imagine the suffering that this family is going through. From the reports that I have read the poor family have only been to the media because of the lack of Commonwealth help in the first place. This despite Rudd's promise to assist.

If this happened under Howard every halfwit, clown, lier, and grub would be calling Howard heartless and how dare he leave an Australian stranded. Under Rudd, this is acceptable prectice. Where are drips like Henderson and Keating? Come on guys, or does self interest override the morals that you proclaimed to have 12 months ago.

I guess the Lapthornes are not "working families"...I cringe every time I imagine what these people must be going through.

I think you'll find it has more to do with leaking information and hinding the case and finding her. It happened in the missing girl Maddie's case too. Although I'm not quite sure how any information that the media are giving out with hinder the case. Here's hoping she's found soon. Its so terrible. My heart goes out to her family.

Of course the family will be more than abxious to find out info and hope it is not for the worst but lets put the matter in some perspective shall we, like in Australia alone there are reportedly something like 30,000 missing peoples in any one given year, and remember the media circuses of a drug runner being hung in Singapore, Corby, Haneef and any other sensationalist matter that the media beat up, quite probably not helping authorities do their work and well maybe something of that in it.

There is a lot of truth in what you say but the poor bastard is there desperate & isolated. The only info he is getting is from the media so it is already in the public domain. Something is wrong & the AFP should assert themselves more and be more considerate of this man's anguish.

The problem is that Mr. Lapthorne criticised the AFP - you cannot do that - not allowed - he is now considered a whistleblower - this is how Australian citizens are treated - if you speak out you are victimised - it is most definitely a true account of what happens - it's also his word against the AFP officer so who do you think will be believed???

the media are taking advantage of these people. their emotions are running high. while i don't aggree with the way the police are handling matters. sometimes you need to let them do their job. they want to find brit or the afp would not be there. its a horrid situation and these people are at breaking point, with the media following every move they make.

Rudd and Smith are probably looking for another of their PR stunts in front of the Press in Canberra. One of many dog and pony shows he loves to do for us all. Where is Alexander Downer, please come back all is forgiven. Smith is where and doing what? Baby over board RUDD?

Today on radio i heard the mother deride our PM for not doing enough. She said she would love to see this situation happen to him and his family. i was shocked to hear this. There is a limit to what the PM can do, and to wish harm on his family seemed a violent thing to say. i was starting to realize why some of the police and those trying to do the case try to stay out of teh way of this kind of angry aggression. aust is like croatia if a body is found nobody gets informed till they r sure.

If this is the only thing that shocks you Jasmine then you can count yourself very lucky - the mother is within her rights to say what she did as you would if it happened to you. The problem is your naivity tends to overshadow what really goes on in the real world. She was not wishing harm upon anyone but basically stating the facts -giving examples of the PM being in their shoes - this woman is completely distraught as she cannot believe why people will not allow them to speak out - listen to her voice and so would anyone if they were in their shoes. The family should know what's going on and be told first and none of this cover-up or threats made to them. It's not good enough for citizens to be threatened or do you agree with that?

Heartbreaking situation for her family to be in, and my heart goes out to them. Having said that, I would ask ,what the hell can the PM or our Govt do in another country, other than have our Embassy and diplomats keep pressuiring those in power to do all they can to find this young woman. As with Corby etc, the public scream and accuse the Govt, but fail to realise they are dealing with another countries laws and system.Maybe they could make some suggestions on just WHAT they imagine Govt can do

Susan: The PM doesn't have to do a thing but do the right thing - it's the way the AFP have spoken to the family - GET THE DRIFT - that's where the PM should be pulling heads in - all the assistance was given to Haneef!! that's where the difference is - this is just one example of someone else being elsewhere and no assistance is provided and most probably have lost their life - we have a foreign minister and diplomats - has there been anything said about them assisting the family - the PM can travel the world yet he is unable to pick up a telephone and make a few phone calls!!

I understand that this family are suffering deeply with their daughter having gone missing over the other side of the world, but I'm not exactly sure what they want the AFP/Govt to do that they aren't already doing. The capacity for our police force/government to do anything in foreign countries is very limited, particularly ones where diplomatic relations between their country and ours are few and far between. The media frenzy on this matter is getting out of hand.

Jasmine, the threat to not tell the family of updates is inappropriate and, if true, grounds to have the officer replaced, or if they are acting under orders, grounds for the minister to be sacked. The family deserve better. If it weren't Rudd who was PM, but Mr Howard, I have no doubt Mr Howard would have made the effort to meet personally with the family and to see that they were given every bit of care. Instead, one gets the impression these people don't vote right.

yes jasmine, the media hype is just gone overboard. looking for brit, when people that were with her have left the country makes things even more difficult. its like looking for a needle in a hay stack. lots of people go missing everyday, lots are never found. its a horrible horrible fact of life. someone should be there with these people comfortng them, not letting them get their hopes up, this is a horrible thing for them to be going through, the police know this. the media i am not sure doesn

THIS IS THE LAST THING THEY NEEDED! - YOU INSENSITIVE B*ST*RDS! Apathy reigns supreme with these police men. If you had been there they (the Lapthornes) woulden't be venting their frustration to the media. They just lost their daughter! Hop to it!

Happy Fun Ball "Jasmine, the threat to not tell the family of updates is inappropriate and, if true, grounds to have the officer replaced, or if they are acting under orders, grounds for the minister to be sacked....." And have you for one moment thought that the Croation Police might well have said that media hysteria is something we can well do without to do our job as best we can, and so Mr AFP man, please say to the father that we wish him not to be talking to the media.......!
