Watts, Jackman most down to earth: Aspen

9/10/2008 10:00:00 AM.  |
Veteran Hollywood reporter Nelson Aspen counts Australian actors Naomi Watts and Hugh Jackman among some of the most down to earth stars in the world.

Aspen, who is in Australia promoting his new book Hollywood Insider - Exposed!, has rubbed shoulders with most of the business's biggest names over the past 40 years.

He says he is impressed with Watts, who even picks up her own bags from the carousel at the airport.

"She's really down to earth in spite of all the fame," Aspen said following a visit to the Sydney Children's Hospital at Randwick on Wednesday.

"Even though the paparazzi chase her and she has her unfortunate moments because of her fame, she's not forced to live in a gilded cage like poor Nicole Kidman, she really gets out and about much more."

Aspen also praised Jackman, describing him as "the most normal, nice, fun-loving guy".

"Every time I've ever run into Hugh he's had either baby spittle or mustard or clumps in his hair," he said.

"He's just a normal bloke who's got his hands full with his kids."

Nelson, who does crosses around the world including on the Seven Network in Australia, as well as in New Zealand, Britain and Ireland, has watched the appetite for Australian stars in Hollywood grow over the years.

He says he remembers when Crocodile Dundee star Paul Hogan was the only Australian entertainer Americans ever knew.

"Now you can't cross Rodeo Drive without running into an Australian," he said.

"And it's not just the world being a smaller place, I think the Australian sensibility just fits in very well with Hollywood.

"Yeah, you're beautiful, you're talented, but there's a down to earth, no baloney kind of attitude that's really nice."

Nelson's book gives an insight into Hollywood stars and some interesting anecdotes, but he insists he's not a muck raker, like so many other entertainment journalists.

"I don't tickle with glee over the misfortune of others," Aspen said.

"These are my neighbours and my friends and my peers and people that I have to live with every time I step foot out of the house."

While he's prepared to tell critical stories if it's newsworthy, for example if a celebrity breaks the law drink driving, he won't get too personal.

"I'm not out to sabotage, I'm just out to inform and entertain. If you're looking for dirt slinging - it's not me," he said.

"I've never had a bump in the road, nobody's ever sued me, nobody's ever accused me of lying, or making things up or exaggerating," he said.

At a time when most celebrity bloggers are scathing of celebrities, Nelson believes his trustworthiness helps him get access and exclusives.

"There is a trend nowadays for these reporters who are so mean," he said.

"And that's the thing - it's nowadays - make this call to me in 10 years and I'll still be doing what I'm doing. They won't be."
