Hundreds turned away from homeless shelters daily

Australia's homeless crisis is becoming so bad many are being kicked back onto the streets by shelters because there's no room.

A report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare looks at the state and federal Supported Accommodation Assistance program for homeless people, and victims of domestic violence.

It's found that although 14,000 people with housing needs were accommodated each night, hundreds were not.

More than half of the people turned away were under the age of 20, and it's found some groups, like couples with children, had more difficulty accessing accommodation than singles did.

Felicity Murdoch from the Institute of Health and Welfare says more than 350 people - mostly teenagers are being turned away every night.

“There’s certainly more people seeking accommodation, than there are places available.

“One of the things that we’ve found is that families in particular seem to have particular accommodation difficulties – one of the reasons for this is that families, when they are accommodated tend to stay a lot longer than individuals.”

Federal Housing Minister Tanya Plibersek says the AIHW figures make it clear governments need to improve their existing response to homelessness.

Ms Plibersek says the government has spent $150 million on an initiative to build 600 homes for the homeless, and is developing a white paper to set out a national plan to reduce homelessness.

yes it is a very real problem alot of places will only take single women with children. and then the boys have to be under 12. the men and boys have to find some where else to go. families get broken up. then if the boys do not have a father to look after them who does? this where we end up with young boys on the streets using drugs and doing crimes. the shelters can only do so much. they can only cater for so many. there needs to be more government funding.

Bel, a system was trialled in a town called "Worgle", in Austria during the last Depression. If this was in use ALL the time, most homeless would vanish because of the economic viabilities. Only problem is it sort of negates the wealth factor fromteh banks..ha ha..cant have that, just ask Lincoln or Kennedy, they'd tell you if they could. Google Worgle..it was amazing what was done n 13 mnths! Certainly looks WAY better then the monetry system we use today.

Whatever Rudd may or may not do, the homelessness crisis in this country is part of the Howard legacy. Studies have shown that the gap between the rich and poor grew steadily during the Howard years, and to add insult to injury, the little toad cut the programs providing support to the homeless year by year, thrusting the responsibility for dealing with this problem onto the community sector. Australians are entitled to know the truth about these matters, and they should never be forgotten.
