Newsreader distracted by Facebook, forgets to read news

10/10/2008 1:02:00 PM.  | Tim Brunero
A Melbourne newsreader has been disciplined after she was so engrossed in her Facebook profile she forgot to read the news.

The incident happened last Sunday at 4pm at talk radio station 3AW, when the news jingle was mysteriously followed by a series of advertisements.

According to industry gossip a producer raced into the newsroom only to find the newsreader on the computer.

By the time the reader had announced her was ready to broadcast the news, most of the six-minute time slot had lapsed.

The mix-up also threw Magic 693, and regional stations that take 3AW's news, into disarray.

"Questions were asked and the reader said she had 'computer problems'. Further investigations by the IT team found she was on Facebook at the time," said an outsider.

Management at 3AW promptly sent a memo to all staff telling them to watch their computer usage.

It is addictive. I have connected with people I've not spoken to in decades.
