Qantas workers push for local maintenance

10/10/2008 8:56:00 AM.  | AAP
Qantas maintenance workers will hold a mass meeting in Sydney today to discuss outsourcing and offshoring concerns, following a spate of recent safety incidents.

A recent survey of Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) members found 80 per cent of Qantas maintenance workers did not believe contracting work out had improved productivity or efficiency.

Only 29 per cent said they had faith in Qantas management to understand issues relating to safety and staffing.

"Our members are extremely concerned that the safety reputation of Qantas is in danger of being undermined by management cost-cutting," AMWU national secretary Dave Oliver said today.

"A recent survey of our members revealed the majority felt the impacts of offshoring and outsourcing meant work needed to (be) re-checked or done more often."

Mr Oliver said the union would seek to bring work back on shore and in-house.

It was also seeking guarantees no maintenance jobs would be lost as a result of the latest round of staff cuts.

Australian Workers Union (AWU) representatives will also attend today's meeting at 1pm (AEDT),  following meetings in Brisbane and Melbourne earlier in the week.

The latest incident to plague the airline saw more than 70 people injured when Tuesday's QF72 flight from Singapore to Perth suddenly dropped altitude.

Up to a dozen people were seriously hurt, some with spinal injuries.
