Police set to charge teenager over sister's stabbing death

11/10/2008 6:15:00 AM.  | Laura Tunstall

Police are expected to charge a Sydney woman over the stabbing death of her younger sister.

The 20-year-old was arrested at her family's home on Mosley St at Strathfield around 11.30am Friday.

Police found her inside the home with the body of her 18-year-old sister, who had suffered fatal stab wounds.

It's believed a neighbour called police. Residents in the street say the girls had lived at the home with their parents and a brother for around 10 years.

Police are now questioning the 20-year-old woman and it's expected she will be charged tonight.

Forensics officers spent the afternoon at the home while detectives door-knocked surrounding houses.

One resident has told LIVENEWS.com.au the family were very quiet, and he only knew them to wave to.

"It's terrible," he said.

"I'm just coming home from work and I just heard it on the radio.

"Then I heard from my own family. I was shocked, actually."

The law needs changing! People just cannot justify their actions by the simple fact they can claim insanity - which no doubt will apply in this case!

So we can help the poor, we can help the aged, we can help the young, we can help the physically disabled but as for the mentally disabled, well they can just rot in hell...People talk about protecting the weakest in our society, well you can't get much weaker than the mentally insane - they have no idea. Has it occured to you that if we HELP these people they wouldn't commit crime in the first place! Mind you there is absolutley not mention at all of this women being insane!

Please read my comment - it is defence mechanism used too often which you may have misunderstood - the mentally disabled don't get the right end of the deal and I agree on that point it's the ones who assume to take on the illness just to save their skins is the problem after a crime is committed! The premise is that this may well be this person's defence to claim their freedom or a lesser sentence however if they were not insane previously what made them tick over the line or perhaps they were drug affected - it is all speculation at this point! Perhaps the fact that her sister may have decided to borrow her clothes - it's no excuse to take someone's life because someone cannot control their behaviour it is where mental illness is confused with out of control rage-this is a tragedy no matter which way you look at it - there are no winners here!

Ahhh - point taken - my appologies. I assumed you were one of those people who had absolutely no understanding of mental illness. The amount of crime committed by the mentally ill is huge, and they have nowhere to turn. its a pathetic state of affairs when the criminal justuce system has better ways of helping that the health system. BTW - I agree, there are no winners in this situation. My heart goes out to the parents, one child dead and the other one is the perpetrator, what a nightmare.

I actually know the girl who was killed, and the thing was that these two sisters did get along well, unlike many siblings who fight often, these girls were quite close. It is terrible, the amount of grief that the family must be feeling. It is so sad, the young girl was just about to finish year 12, and was a very bright girl, and was in the final round of interviewee's for a scholarship. It is heart breaking that she wasn't able to live her life.
