Federal Opposition to "fight" Mary River dam

11/10/2008 4:44:00 PM.  | AAP
The federal opposition says it will take on the fight to stop the controversial Traveston Crossing Dam proposed on the Mary River, near Gympie in south-east Queensland.

Opposition climate change, environment and water spokesman Greg Hunt today said the proposed dam was one of the "worst sites in Australia".

He said the dam would have major adverse environmental impacts - including water wastage and on native species.

Mr Hunt was speaking at the Australia-China Business Forum at the University of Queensland.

"I visited the Traveston dam site, I've met with the people and I've looked at both the lower and the upper Mary and the message is very clear that we're not against dams but this is a bad dam site," Mr Hunt said.

"The site is a large, flat evaporative pond ... (and would be) a massive waste of water.

"It would destroy one of the great food bowls in Australia.

"You have all sorts of different foods that are grown there and an incredible loss of productive land of capacity.

"The dam itself is (also) likely to have a major impact on scarce species including the Mary River turtle and others."

One alternative would to use deep chasm dams which would be subject to a lower evaporation, he said.

"We're going to have the fight.

"It was a politically chosen site and by all accounts all the advice to the government is is it's an unwise site."

Goddness, the Libs are doing a bit of greenwashing. The party of environmental destruction and degradation is going to save the Mary. Two observations: a) anyone who believes the Libs have decided to commit themselves to environmental protection requires a brain transplant, b) Greg Hunt, whose mediocrity is cringeworthy, being wheeled out as a talking head, shows the level of deperation and lack of talent in the Liberal Party.

Comeon Sparrow and stop clowning around if it is possible for which lines do you not understand, ie "The site is a large, flat evaporative pond ... (and would be) a massive waste of water." and would you not want a more efficient water storage? or " You have all sorts of different foods that are grown there and an incredible loss of productive land of capacity." - Sparrows mightn't eat much...but! and with dams anywhere there are always going to be environmental issues.

The last time you were touring this area was? large flat bowl? similar to the one at Tinarroo they must mean. it holds water well, does its job well. Funny about the turtle eh, ALL these years people have been playing/fishing in the Mary...turns up when "dam " is mentioned. Some farms yes, mostly gone.no salad bowl like the downs? As for "daming the mary" it has been for yrs! Called a barrage, still a dam, just lots less construction. Someone always looses out in big Schemes like this, no helpin
