A former president of Finland has won the Nobel Peace Prize for a long career of peacemaking around the globe.

71-year-old Martti Ahisaari oversaw the 2005 reconciliation of the Indonesian government and Free Aceh Movement rebels, bringing an end to a 30 year conflict that killed 15-thousand people.

He also helped lead Kosovo down the path towards independence.

Ahtisaari will receive the Nobel diploma medal and a cheque for more than two million dollars at a ceremony in Oslo in December.
