Woman accused of murdering sister on suicide watch

11/10/2008 4:00:00 PM.  | AAP
A Sydney woman charged with murdering her 18-year-old sister should be monitored while in custody, her lawyer has urged.

Kathleen Worrall, 20, of Strathfield in Sydney's inner west, has been charged with one count of murder after her sister Susan Worrall was found dead at a Strathfield home about 11.30am (AEDT) yesterday.

Susan had died after being stabbed in the neck, police said.

Kathleen Worrall was charged last night and today was formally remanded in custody at Parramatta Bail Court by magistrate Kevin Flack after her lawyer said she was not seeking to be released.

"She is not seeking ... bail," Legal Aid Commission solicitor Lucy Maranga told the court this morning.

Mr Flack granted Ms Maranga's request that Worrall continue receiving medication while in custody.

"I instruct that she needs that (medication)," he said.

Ms Maranga also asked that her client be watched.

"Also, that it's not indicated there is a risk of self-harm, but in the circumstances of the incident I ask that she be carefully monitored," Ms Maranga said.

Worrall did not appear in court for the brief mention and the matter was adjourned to Burwood Local Court on Wednesday.

Two women - one of whom was believed to be Worrall's mother - and a man were present in court but declined to comment when approached by a pack of waiting media outside.

"We know very little about it," one of the women said shortly after the court mention.

Susan was a Year 12 student at Methodist Ladies College, Burwood.

In her profile on the online networking site MySpace, she says: "I love comedy shows and crime mysteries".

Neighbours of the family's Mosely Street home yesterday described the two young women along with their mother, father, and a younger boy, as a "normal, happy family".

yes the normal happy familes are the ones you have to watch. you never know when one of them is going to fall to pieces. what a tragic time for their parents. how on earth do you love the daughter you have left when she murdered her sister. Yet it seems she was not "normal" at all but very sick. another very horrible incident and another grieving family. in a sense this family has lost two daughters. what a terrible time for those doing the hsc at her school this coming week.
