Treasurer urges world powers not to forget Australia

11/10/2008 11:30:00 AM.  | Erin Maher
The world's biggest economies are being urged to include Australia in their talks about the financial crisis.

Treasurer Wayne Swan has told a US think-tank, the country wants a coordinated approach to a long-term solution, not a quick fix.

He believes the answer to the escalating crisis lies in better regulation, not more or less of it.

Seroius question folks. Given where we are, who would you prefer to have at the Treasury helm right now, independent of the party that they represent? (1) Swan (2) Costello. I'd like to solicit some serious debate about competence & robustness of the individual NOT about the politics of their respective parties.

Geoff - I'll go first. Peter Costello is surely then man we need to be leading the debate during this tough economic times. Mr Swan is appearing more and more inept and an incredible parrot with all the politician language that goes hand-in-hand with the way Mr Rudd runs his team.

heheheh Guys do not forget when Labor was in the wildnerness and Wayne Swann lost his seat he taught at Queensland University until he with many others were brought back from the wilderness. And when they had shadow ministerial roles just what did these fools do. Of course we lack credibility gobally now, with fools like this. They are the laughing stock of Asia. Smith is one of the worst foreign ministers we have also. What has he achieved Labor came to power. They are living off the Liberals

All I know is Krudd has increased my taxes, decreased my benefits, done nothing for my losing portfolio and part from taxcess ALL he's done is make 2 USELESS websites and introduced a FirstHomeSavingsAccount with a cut off of $5000, yes $5000, not $500,000 over 4 years. YOU would have to be retarded to even open 1, and we all know there are retards, so we're (Tax payers) also going to get charged for administering it the retard scheme. Damn u Krudd, how f'ing stupid can u get???

You would have to take Costello over Swann any day, just on years of experience but also remember that Costello had is run in what were buoyant economic times that supported some pain being taken initially to reign in deficit budgeting and right now where some building has to take place, I'd be looking for someone with that type of experience, perhaps a Lindsay Fox (started with one truck) but then he is possibly getting a bit long in the tooth, but could be a great mentor to Mal.

contd....the Mal story for we're about at the 33rd. anniversary of when another Malcolm had the balls to make a call on the GG and the GG had the balls too to appoint a caretaker government, so whereas our current GG has....., she is already renowned for bringing good rain to the parched west and maybe she will with all good fortune for us subscribe to bringing down the curtain on a barren political field with the help of some senatorial blocking - bring it on Malcom - your turn Bull.

Swannie my lad if we don't have a quick fix there will be nothing left for a 'coordinated approach' to fix. Let’s have the fix-the quicker the better and then look at legislation for the future. Sure it sounds very intelligent to talk about long term fixes but sometimes the so called long term objectives are an excuse for not doing anything for the present. Kevin Rudd is guilty of this as well-all his plans are for the future-the 2020 summit, infrastructure, and climate change- but we also have to live in the present.

We saw Mr. Rudd address the UN. It was an embarrasment. There were no other polite words for it. Now we have Mr. Swan trying to get into an economic meeting. It must be his first attempt. The man is an embarrasment every time he opens his mouth. He has a crib of the big words, and is slowly trying them out in his sound bites, but we know instinctively he has no idea of their meaning. Here they all are swanning about taking the credit for Costellos work. It is sadly symptomatic of all their work.
