Autopsy report on Britt Lapthorne's body expected today

13/10/2008 10:01:00 AM.  | AAP
The family of Australian backpacker Britt Lapthorne could find out today how she died, with details of an autopsy on her body expected to be released in Croatia.

An autopsy report, to be released by police in the tourist town of Dubrovnik, could shed light on how the 21-year-old Melbourne university student died.

Her family believe she was murdered after going missing in the early hours of September 18.

Ms Lapthorne's father, Dale, believes there are many unanswered questions over the young tourist's death.

"I'm really anxious about the autopsy report," Mr Lapthorne said.

"I want an assurance that it's being treated as a foul play incident ... I just want a logical, reasonable explanation."

Croatian police said on Friday DNA tests had confirmed a body found off the coast of Dubrovnik on October 6 was Ms Lapthorne.

Police also are expected to release the body to Ms Lapthorne's family later today, and her father and brother Darren hope to return home to Melbourne with her body on Wednesday or Thursday.

Mr Lapthorne said he would seek fresh opinions about his daughter's cause of death depending on the outcome of the Croatian autopsy.

"At the moment I'm saying it is my daughter, I accept the fact that it is my daughter and we are bringing my daughter home," Mr Lapthorne told the Nine Network today.

"But we are holding the right to have a second opinion both on the DNA testing and the autopsy depending on the autopsy results ..."

Mr Lapthorne and his son travelled to Dubrovnik following Ms Lapthorne's disappearance in a bid to find her, while her mother Elke stayed in Melbourne.

The family reject any suggestion Ms Lapthorne jumped or fell off the cliff above the cove where her body was found, 18 days after she was last seen at a nightclub in the nearby town centre.

A Croatian newspaper has reported a long-sleeved T-shirt belonging to Ms Lapthorne was found off the side of a main road 6km west of Dubrovnik, near the village of Stikovica.

Mr Lapthorne said on Saturday a detective assigned to the case from the capital, Zagreb, checked the reports with local police and was told the shirt did not belong to the Australian.
