Vietnam to spare lives of Australian drug traffickers

13/10/2008 1:24:00 PM.  | Olivia Suzanski & AAP

Vietnam has agreed to grant clemency to two Australians who are facing the death sentence for drug trafficking.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd today, the Vietnamese Prime Minister said his country would spare the lives of Sydney woman Jasmine Luong and NSW man Tony Manh.

Speaking through a translator, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung made the announcement in Canberra.

“Building upon the excellent friendship between our two countries, and on humanitarian grounds, I have informed the Prime Minster that the Vietnamese president has decided to grant clemency to two Vietnamese Australians charged with drug trafficking.”

Both were arrested and charged for attempting to traffic heroin.

The Australian passport served its purpose then.

Well done Mr Rudd. A politician who has the courage to stand up for his principles and make contact at the highest level with a laudable result. So much better than the weasel words of the Rodent, who declined to support the death penalty in Australia (becaseu he knew the electorate wouldn't buy it), but cheered on the firing squads in Indonesia, an utterly unprincipled and untenable position. Rudd is slowly rebuilding the credibility the Rodent systematically destroyed.

Darren, I assume you are referring to Kevin Rudd's predecessor, Mr Howard, when you speak of "The Rodent". I think that particular phrase speaks more of your own misguided prejudices and blind ideaological hatred than it does of the person it refers to. Is your memory so short (or selective) that you forget Howard's entreaties to the Singaporean Government over the death sentence handed down and carried out to that other administrative Australian, Van Nguyen? Or the Bali Nine in Indonesia?

I distinctly remember Rudd also cheering on the firing squad in reference to the three Bali bombers, Carrow. Does the passport make that much difference?

darren carrow-Rudd just got lucky-he has been able to stitch up a deal-Vietnam will get something in return. If he is as good as you says he is let’s see him save the members of the Bali 9 that have been sentenced to execution. The silver haired bodgie-Bob Hawke-couldn't save Chambers and Barlow when a no nonsense Malaysian Government hung them despite his pleas.

Because, Mr Scott Free, a lot of people in our great country are of the belief that the death penalty is abhorrent, primitive and a dangerous act denying reversal if later found innocent. Thankfully our current government is more caring about Australians overseas than the past lot who just pushed terrorism fears. Even the Vietnamese PM said it was on "humanitarian grounds". Gee what an eloquent question you posed.

David, could you still display the simple childish innocence for the defence of drug smugglers after your child, or a close innocent family member has been hacked to death by a drug crazed spouse or another has been shot as he slept on his couch? A lot of people, in this great country you refer to, go to work to earn an honest living, there are plenty of jobs, why didn't they have an honest job?

David Cares not to refer to Krudd being happy for a few executions in Indonesia and conveniently forgets it was Alexander who did not want to get a Xmas Card from the Singaporean Hangman and personally I reckon that execution is good for anyone who wants to prosper from drugs that feed on to robberies, deaths, injuring and murders of many in otherwise peaceful societies for would you want to next be funding prisoner exchange at expense of responsible peoples health - hang them all high!
