Beckham, LA coming back to play Qld Roar

Superstar David Beckham and his LA Galaxy teammates have been confirmed to visit Brisbane to play the Queensland Roar in an exhibition match on December 11.

Roar officials and Queensland Sports Minister Judy Spence Thursday morning announced details of the crowd-pulling friendly match to be played at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.

Suncorp Stadium general manager Paul Sergeant said LA Galaxy management were impressed with what Brisbane had to offer.

"(Suncorp Stadium) is arguably the finest rectangle stadium in this part of the world, if not the world," he said.

"There's some fantastic (training) facilities down at Ballymore and the QRU have been very very supportive and very very accommodating in making them welcome, and likewise with the hotels around town."

Sergeant defended Beckham's playing record with his new team against suggestions the England star may pull out of the Brisbane game.

"If you look at his playing history, the Galaxy has had 28 games and he's played 24 of them. The only four he has missed is because of international duties," he said.

"I think it's a little bit of a hypothetical question at the moment. He's in good health, he's in good condition and he's playing very, very well."

Beckham drew a crowd of 80,000 to Sydney's ANZ Stadium late last year when the Galaxy went down 5-3 to Sydney FC despite a signature goal from the former England captain.

Despite the international World Cup qualifier attracting a less than expected crowd of 34,000 Wednesday night, Spence said she was confident the Beckham factor would fill up the stands.

"There will be a lot of people who have never been to a soccer match who are going to come and watch David Beckham play - it's amazing to have someone like him in our backyard," Spence said.

Spence said tickets had been priced at $17.50 for children and $35 for adults to help fill the stadium.

Queensland Roar CEO Lawrence Oudendyk said spectators could expect a close game between two sides of similar standards from opposite sides of the world.

"This match represents a great opportunity for all football lovers in Queensland and also presents a great opportunity for us to introduce people to the game of football," he said.

Oudendyk said tickets went on sale for Queensland Roar members on Thursday and will be on public sale on October 30.
