Parents may pay for 'education revolution' laptops

11/05/2008 4:00:00 PM.  | James Cregan

Working families may be forced to pay a levy to prop up the Rudd Government's plans to give computers to all school students.

Funds have been set aside to pay for the laptops but most schools are not equipped with sufficient cabling and security.

Parents groups are already on the fundraising trail, fearing that they will end up propping up the Rudd Government's promised 'Education Revolution.'

Most public schools lack the infrastructure required for the technology, particularly the cabling and power outlets to run the computers promised in last year's election.

There are also claims that some parents may be forced to pay for the laptops in the form of student levies.

Federal Shadow Education Minister Tony Smith says the policy promise has turned out to be a cruel hoax.

“The money’s not there for the schools to actually use the computers, so now parents are going to be forced to either pay higher school fees or do more fundraisers or both,” Mr Smith said.

“Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard have known about this for six months but they don’t care about these working families.”

One of a string of broken promises. But it is cold and heartless to treat struggling working families in this way.

Obviously there is a fine print caveat in Rudd's so called "education revolution" election promise - you (ie the working families) will have to pay for it! Working families, you will only have yourselves to blame as you are the one voting for this mob! You got what you deserve - what's the problem?

As someone with kids in public education this promise always sickened me...so did the liberal proposal. How about we get books in the classroom, and airconditioning. How about we build dam classrooms instead of demountables. Lets start with BASICS. I am a huge advocate for public education but if they spend one cent on these stupid laptops at my childrens school, i will pull them out immediately and they will go to private school for the rest of their education!

Mate, excellent point, this is the point I have been making for so long, "BACK TO BASICS", its a disgrace the state gov have left schools with demountables, KRudd should chip in where its needed such as this, and aircon. Look, this big talk is all about self promotion, it’s like the 2020 summit; it’s about highlighting KRudd and the gang that’s it. Its, look at me, look at me, look at me kind of stuff. Then if there’s any energy left after the self promotion bit you may get a piece of the acti
