Major Burma aid package destroyed

12/05/2008 10:45:00 AM.  | Victoria Owens

A massive aid package on its way to cyclone ravaged Burma has been destroyed after the boat carrying the goods sank on the way to disaster zones.

The Red Cross boat sank after hitting a submerged tree, going down with vital food, clean water and medical supplies.

It's been reported the official death toll from Cyclone Nargis is now over 28 thousand, with more than 33 thousand missing.

Meantime there's still concern aid isn't getting through to millions of cyclone survivors despite the Burmese government's decision to allow more aid flights into the country.

But British foreign secretary David Milliband is critical of the government's approach to the crisis.

“I would be amazed if there haven’t been around 100 thousand people who’ve died already, although I don’t think that is a confirmed figure, I would be amazed if it doesn’t reach that number.

“Hundreds of thousands more are at risk, and a natural disaster has turned into a humanitarian catastrophe of genuinely epic proportions…”

Can someone explain why are we sending so much aid to a country that does not want it..Would it not be in the best interests of australia to spend that money at home?? noone can help anyone if they will not accept it ..if the aid does get through who will receive it . certainly not the ones that need it ..the military will gobble it and then pretend they never saw it ,..wake up and leave them alone it is a catastrophy we cannot help
