ACT police say they may be able to identify the people involved in a bashing incident filmed on a mobile phone and posted on a video-sharing website.
The disturbing vision features a gang of teenage girls beating a middle-aged woman near the entrance of Woden Plaza, in Canberra’s south.
"We've been successful in that we've been able to identify a couple of leads in relation to the identities or the possible identities of the people involved," Superintendent Frank Jameson told reporters in the ACT.
"[We also have] a possible identity of the person who could be described as the victim in this incident."
But Superintendent Frank Jameson says there are still a few things that need to be sorted out before they can investigate.
"For the common assault to be investigated further we really need a statement of complaint from the victim.
"We want to know what happened before the incident and after the incident," he said.
ACT Shadow Police Minister Brendan Smith said an inadequate police presence was partly to blame.
"Well I think first and foremost you've got to lay some of the blame at the feet of the government.
"There are not enough police out on the street."
