Thou shalt not protest: Skateboards, condoms, t-shirts to attract fines

New police powers introduced for World Youth Day have been labelled unfair and akin to tough APEC laws.

Under the regulations, people who disturb pilgrims during the Catholic festival could face arrest and fines of up to $5,500.

Wearing an anti-Catholic t-shirt, handing out condoms and even riding a skateboard could incur the penalty.

NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon says it's preventing free speech.

“These new police powers are not fair, they’re designed to give the pope a sanitised view of Sydney and World Youth Day,” she told LIVENEWS.com.au

“To have a crime defined as 'being annoying' is ridiculous and really does make New South Wales look extremely foolish.”

"We know the police can successfully manage huge crowds. One million people often turn up for New Year's Eve revelry, so clearly these new police powers are not needed and they should be cancelled."

The Catholic Church denies it has called for the powers, which were signed by NSW Deputy Premier John Watkins on Friday.

I presume the pope will also be fined when he rides by in his silly ass popemobile without wearing a seatbelt. Now we wouldn't want him to fall off his throne would we! I have heard that if a person is fined, just show the police your rosary beads and they will let you go. Also if it happens to be a fire ban day, will we make him put out all the candles and smoking pot he slings around?....... I really can't believe what is happening. We seem to be well and truly in a police state.

"Wearing an anti-catholic t-shirt, handing out condoms and even riding a skateboard could incur a fine of up to $5500." Are you serious!!!!! That cannot be true, there is no way.....I am going to investigate this...and if it is true, I vote we all wear anti catholic t-shirts & hand out condoms, in protest of the NSW labour state parliament becasue they are the ONLY ones who could allow this type of BULL!!!

So.........I assume ANY Muslim walking down the street will be arrested - if not- WHY NOT - clearly thier dress is anti catholic in itself. What a JOKE this State has become - do people really still delude themselves into believing this is the best city in the world and that we live in a free and democratic state.....wake up people , time for a good old civil revolution.

Mark, don't revolt, migrate, why not go to a happy anti-catholic state where you can walk down the street with your muslim mates without fear of arrest.

We're obviously living in a society where we all pay the price for trying to voice our opinions or prove a point.

How many of these politicians making these obscene laws are catholics. Really all catholics in parliament should abstain from voting on these matters.

I vote the Freakn Catholic church should fund the event! I vote too that they can take it to the antartic too. In fact I dont give a rats about the whole event. As for the stupid laws invoked for the event, who the hell do you think the man is? He is the POPE..Not GOD. He is no better or important than any other person in the world. For the amount of abuse to chiuldren dished out byu the Catholic churches of the world, why would any one want them to promote world youth day? Idiocy extreme!

As a Catholic I am calling on the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council and all Diocesan Justice and Peace bodies to add their concern about this regulation to those expressed by legal and civil liberty bodies.I call on catholics to engage in acts of civil dosobediance against an unfair and unjust use of police powers in a democratic society. Have I annoyed WYD pilgrims yet? If so, come and get me.

What about anti-muslim shirts? Are these acceptable? Didn't think so. Anti-Catholic shirts shouldn't be acceptable either. A little respect for a few days won't hurt too much, surely?

B, why don't you show some respect and sign your name? The Pope doesn't deserve respect from me, I regard him as just as evil as any Muslim Cleric. I will say what I like about the Pope, and about Mohamed, and about Jesus. False idols all three. Now seeing Catholics stealing from everyone to honour this monster, and seeing the government outlawing dissent, means for the first time I have to view Catholics, not just as a lunatic fringe, but as outright enemies. Now Catholics are a problem.

Seriously, pedophile priests given light sentences - oh get to the point catholic priests sexually abuse our children, politicians and the like grovel at the feet of the head of the largest singular group of pedophiles and sexual abusers on the planet. Kevin Rudd will go doen in history as the PM who had an opportunity to do something about the human rights abuses victims and his failure to protect as any ordinary parent does the sexual safety of our children - Fair Go - NOT SO

Isn't it better for them to have condoms then to not have condoms? However unfortunate it is, not having protection won't stop them but if they haven't that option literally handed to then they may think before hand. Better to be safe then sorry. What exactly counts as anti Catholic shirts anyway? and why only Catholic? Do those silly "*insert religious character here* is my homeboy" ones count? Its not enough the hold up regular train customers that week?

Most Catholics would agree these laws are silly and hysterical. In a coutry that touts tolerance as it's number one moral, Catholics are willing to take it on the chin from people with differing views because it is what keeps our society coherent. I am a Catholic and I support your right to protest but if you are doing it because of the government then protest against them, but if you really have a bone to pick with Catholics do it with courtesy. Wearing a Tshirt will not promote dialogue.

We didnt ask for this to come to our city. We dont want this in our city. When you can get pulled up in the street for wearing a t-shirt theres something seriously wrong with this country. Heres an idea why dont we arrest the guy who stands in front of town hall spewing religious junk and then comes up to me and tells me I'm going to hell for my sins? Or how aboout the mormons and christians who wake me up on sunday morning, when I'm usually hungover, banging on my door. Isnt that harrasment?
