Cardinal George Pell denies sex abuse cover-up

The head of the Catholic Church in Australia has fiercely denied claims of a sexual abuse cover-up.

Anthony Jones wrote to Cardinal George Pell in 2003 telling him Father Terrance Goodall abused him at the age of 29 in a Sydney presbytery

Cardinal Pell told Mr Jones his claims hadn’t been substantiated, because there were no other complaints – despite on the same day confirming similar allegations were made by another man.

The Sydney Archbishop says the letter was a mistake, given he had confirmed all allegations against Father Goodall - except rape.

He says he's apologised to Mr Jones for the oversight.

"The letter to Mr Jones was badly worded and a mistake," he conceded.

"I was attempting to inform him that there was no other allegation of rape. And I overstated my agreement with [Church Investigator, Howard] Murray, who found all other allegations sustained."

Cardinal Pell has admitted it’s an embarrassment, given the Pope’s visit in just a few days.

So, the ABC story is wrong. Another attempt by the left to bring down Christian religion. Shame

I challenge this website to write something positive about WYD.

Hey anonymous Catholic Bloke, how come you are not prepared to sign your name to this, are you ashamed of being a Catholic? But to your challenge; The good thing about WYD is that come Hell or High Water, it will end. The other good thing is it's exposed the Catholic desire to take over the country, now we can oppose them. The only "Good" Catholic is a Protestant!

The best thing about wyd, is these kids get to see how we live in this country. The sad thing about wyd. these kids are going to see us hogtied by ludicrous laws, to protect their church from questions they dont want to hear. Oh and lets not forhet the INSANE cost of hlding it. Perhaps catholic bloke, you and yours of thisd church will hand all collections to the state as reimbursment for it? Nah.didnt think so!

Grame...why are you so keen to know my name? Why does it matter what my name is? Do my opinions count that much to you? Seems they do! At least I am taken seriously. Am I ashamed of being Catholic? No...but I am a little scared, I admit, of people like you, because no matter what we say, you have a conspiracy theory. I read your comments quite often and frankly you are an angry angry man. I would not want you knowing my name. I don't want to take over the country..I just want fair journalism.

putting aside WYD, I see this issue as being a beat up on a man who is conservative. I think there is real material on other people which is never acted upon because they aren't conservative. It has little to do with being Catholic. I think the same terrible game was played out on a former Governor General. You nailed Graeme, he has nothing to offer but anger.

"fair journalism" - you're kidding right? Calm, rational, balanced reporting requires intelligent calm, rational readers (and of journalists with a decent intellectual capacity). The populous want "sound bite" news that grabs their attention for 30 seconds & then moves on. Most human beings are incredibly emotional and so entertainers play to that emotion. Remember an average IQ is only 90-110....scary stuff!

Catholic Bloke, you are very correct. Very obsessed in knowing peoples names for some reason. Creepy.

What a bunch of cowards, hide your names and make personal attacks, you can't get much lower. If you want to be listened to then put your name to what you write, this anonymous stuff is sleazy, cowardly and weak. This is probably the same coward anyway, and it's probably a Lib minister. If you can't stand by what you say it shows that even you don't believe what you write.

The thing i don't get is how can their be a cover up? Don't victims notify police, as other normal victims do? If thats the case, the police would investigate & charges would be bought etc. If the victims are not notifying the police then why not? These are crimes we are talking about! Also how does the church reconcile their obligations to god & State? BTW - I am not Catholic so I'm unsure how all this comes out.

Nick, can you please repeat your comment? Some words were spelt and phrased incorrectly. Graeme...your response didn't really address my challenge either. Just so you know, we Catholics have heard all those questions you think we are being protected from by these laws; which I agree are stupid. Blame the ELECTED government for the selection of the site, cost explosion, protest laws. But I know you just want to blame the Church. I can't change that so good luck to you.

Catholic Bloke, Get out in the sunshine among the cheeful young Catholic pilgrams from overseas, I have been out meeting and feeding them. You will only find whining negative nuts in these columns; good for a look and laugh.

Hey too shamed to give your name Catholic Bloke. I am certainly not anti Catholic, God knows I have slept with plenty of Catholic girls. One even that hadn't been abused as a child, at least one that didn't tell. But these Laws? Someone asked for these laws, who? The response from WYD organisers is somewhat confusing. Catholics must demand that these laws are repealed, then I will believe them. Watching these laws come into force is a bit like living in France and seeing Poland fall, where next?

Catholic Bloke, Perhaps you can point out WHERE i blamed your Church for the Holding of WYD? Perhaps You can also point out where i Blame the church for bringing in the Laws? I do believe the church has asked for the laws to be in place but i blame the stupidity of the GUV. in place for enacting the laws. But then You KNOW what I think so i guess this is a waste of time explaining it. The giving of collections would help to offset the cost the State is paying out. State is broke isnt it?

Very Pedantic Catholic Bloke..I feel you understood what i was saying, mistakes included. The Catholic church is its own worst PR campaigner, they dont need me for that. Religion and Belief aside answer me this. The NSW GUV is finding it hard to come up with 250 odd million for computers in school. What is better money spent, 130 mill on WYD, or on the education of our youths here and Now? Which has the longer lasting benefit to the youths, of our country? Is the Church able to afford to do it?

I am really looking forward to WYD. I look forward to meeting the people. I think it will go well, thanks to those generous peoples willing to give their time so that it runs. I am appalled at how badly the government is handling it. I am not catholic, but I don't have to be to see how important this day is for NSW.

D S, How brave are you? Not willing to stand up and face the person you abuse. That is pretty low don't you think? I am amazed by the number of cowards like you. What is the collective noun for a group of cowards? A Quiver? A Cringe? A Slime? A Hide? A Whine? A Run? A Sneak? A Sleaze? A Whimp? I'll bet you would never say to someone's face, what you write anonymously on a forum. I hope that you can sense my utter contempt for things like you.

if you are the Cardinal( Pell) in charge of so many Australian Catholics one is ultra busy and anyone can slip up at times! so please give his Eminence a break here, a fair go too Everyone slips up at times thats what makes us all human! just so long as we learn from our mistakes so please give his Eminence credit he admitted his mistake that takes honesty and humility A better system producing a more viable outcome for all ie both the Church and the person coming forward may be the way to go
