Catholic Church threatened me with legal action: Jones

11/07/2008 3:28:00 PM.  |
The man at the centre of a sex abuse scandal involving Cardinal George Pell has revealed he was threatened with legal action by the Sydney Archbishop's lawyers.

Anthony Jones, who was sexually assaulted in 1982 by priest, Father Terrence Goodall, says he was threatened with legal action if he spoke about the matter on ABC Television.

The ABC's Lateline program reported on Monday that Dr Pell, the head of the Catholic Church in Australia, gave misleading information to Mr Jones in 2003, after he'd complained about the abuse.

Dr Pell asserted on Monday that the sexual encounter between Mr Jones and Goodall was consensual.

But on Wednesday night, Lateline played police phone taps made in 2003 in which Goodall admitted to Mr Jones the sexual encounter wasn't consensual.

He's released a statement today saying that on Monday he was threatened by Dr Pell's lawyers that if the matter was aired on Lateline, they might prosecute him for contempt of court.

He says on Wednesday evening Goodall's lawyers also threatened to sue him and to prosecute him for being in contempt of court if the program revealing the police telephone intercept was televised on Lateline.

Yesterday, Dr Pell referred the sexual assault allegations and his handling of them, to an independent panel, including retired NSW Supreme Court Judge Bill Priestly.

But Mr Jones says he has little faith in the panel being independent.

It is remarkable how time changes things, even opinions, when nothing else changes. In the 1950's there was a documentary on the great work of a German Christian missionary in Africa. In the sixties, another documentary panned the work. Nothing had changed, only opinion. I don't know about this case. But I am aware of previous articles on it. The only new thing seems to be WYD and a determination (by some) to smear Pell. I have nothing but sympathy for the victim. Kirby's road was different.

Well, isn't it fortunate that the Pope is coming to town. As God's representative on earth he will be able to get the truth straight from the old Alpha and Omega himself. I can't wait to hear the Pope comment on this.

Without wishing to condone any wrongdoing one must question the motives of the ABC.The alleged offence took place in 1982 and the tapped phone call in 2003- why is it that this matter is being raised at this precise time?. One can be forgiven for thinking that the ABC would like to inflict the maximum damage to the Catholic Church during WYD.One cannot recall the ABC making detailed reports about the Heiner inquiry into allegations of Child abuse in 89/90 long after the Anthony Jones case. Kevin Rudd was the Chief of Staff in the Goss Government that shredded the inquiry documents. How come they didn’t seek to embarrass him during the last election campaign?

Watch out, the "Catholics are all important" laws will get you if you offend them. It looks like Pell is just like that Howard appointed GG. It's no wonder they wanted more draconian laws to shut down criticism. This church has a sick and sad history, and it has not improved as we can see that they go to extraordinary lengths to cover up the perversions of priests. The claims that these cover-ups are only being uncovered due to WYD imply that these claims aren't important, that's pretty sick.

Thats the sort of thuggery you can expect from PELL and his cronies. The truth needs to be told PELL I thought you were in that game of speaking the truth...You are nothing but disgraceful.

to all, that arent aware of Australia's Cardinal PELL, do you know of the many untold good deeds he has done all his life for so many! The unseen acts of kindness that the Cardinal never ever self proclaims! So to those that so publicy denigrate such an EMINENT man of the cloth, a man who has many awards for the good works he has done in over 40 plus years for so many! The nerve of you people! You only make your selves look so very bad! so A Happy World Youth day to all, it will be !

Pell and his conservative supporters continue to slyly impugn the motives of Jones and other sexual assault victims for speaking out at this time. Sorry, but is it too inconvenient for you this close to WYD? Maybe we should keep on silencing the victims, just to suit you. I'm very pleased for you that Pell has won many awards. Maybe if he spent less time polishing them on his mantlepiece, and more time remembering his facts.
