ABC journalist Peter Lloyd has been arrested in Singapore on drug charges, and could face serious punishment if convicted.

The 41-year-old ABC journalist will face court in Singapore today, and is one of six people who have been arrested following a drug sting in the country.

The Walkely Award-nominated reporter is accused of supplying a Singapore man with methamphetamine, and is currently speaking with the Australian High Commission.

If convicted Lloyd could face up to 20 years in jail and 15 strikes with the cane.

He's currently being offered consular assistance, with formal charges expected to be laid today.

Peter Lloyd joined the ABC in 1988 before moving to the UK when he worked for the BBC and British Sky News.

He then spent a decade in Australian commercial news and current affairs, working as a reporter/presenter, a program executive producer and North America Correspondent.

He returned to the ABC in 2000.

His reports on the Bali bombings and later the tsunami disaster earned several Walkely Award nominations.

The ABC has now issued the following statement:

"The ABC has been advised by the Dept of Foreign Affairs that Peter Lloyd, an ABC foreign correspondent, has been arrested in Singapore and is likely to be charged with drug-related offences.

"Peter was in Singapore on leave from his posting in New Delhi. The ABC has not been told the full details of the case, but we were aware that Peter had been undergoing hospital treatment in Singapore for a serious eye infection which he contracted while on leave.

"The ABC is in close contact with consular officials and is also taking steps to ensure Peter is given appropriate legal representation."

Being a reporter and being presumably "worldly wise", it seems incredible that a man of this stature could be guilty of doing such a foolish act. Surely after Schappelle Corby's case, he would know the dangers of handling drugs overseas! There are countries with much more severe drug punishments than Australia. Let's hope it is all a 'misunderstanding".

The cane and twenty lashes? I'd ask for forty and laugh, it's the bullets that would concern me!

I have admired PterLloyd's ABC news reports for several years now. I cannot believe that a Journalist of his stature and professionalism would or could be involved in this case. I am hoping that he was perhaps going 'undercover' for a story. I do hope he is innocent of these charges. I feel for him and his family.

I love "Foreign Correspondent" and I have seen many of Peter Lloyds episodes. I hope he is ok, and understand and respect the tremendous presssures he must have faced in bringing the cutting edge stories he has to Australia and the world. Good luck Peter!

I read with disbelief the comment from palo habib - sorry palo but your comment on 'the origin of Australian's as convicts and criminals and still in their blood' is absolutely ridiculous and you obviously don't have a clue, you silly fool and as for Peter what a silly man you are for getting involved with ice.

Habib, what country did you flee from and why did you come to this country of 'Convicts and Criminals'? You are quite clearly ignorant of the causes, of British history, the industrial revolution, and the napoleonic war, the Irish famine, slavery and transportation etc. You should realise that most of these people would be released on bond for the same offence today. I am happy that my teenage ancestors stole from the squire and were transported rather than starved.

And don't forget Australia currently has an Asian Crime Squad and a Middle East Crime Squad to deal with the criminals that have sneaked in from Asia and the Middle East.

I am deeply sadden and shocked that Peter LLoyd has gone this far and low to get involved with drugs. I am concerned, however with how his family is coping. I used to babysit his beautiful kids and know his family from when his children attended childcare. Peter and his family are one of these people, that are genuine and happy and full of life. My prayers are with Peter and his family.

This is speculation, but due to his hospitalization in Singapore, Lloyd was likely given a mandatory drug screening test - with any positive results being turned over to the police. Once they have something like that in their hands, the net tends to fall broadly on involved friends/acquaintances, with everybody attempting to buy some leniency by implicating others.
