Pilgrim arrested for bashing a protestor

LATEST FEATURES

World Youth Day pilgrim was taken away in a police van for attacking a demonstrator on Oxford Street.

The pilgrim allegedly approached the local demonstrator, Stefan Joksic, of Newtown, and jumped on him and called him a "fag", before being taken back to Taylor Square with police.

Police on the scene would not comment on the incident but demonstrator

Stefan is joined by a devil, a drag queen and a pink alien are opposing Pope Benedict XVI's stand against condoms, homosexuality and abortion.

They are part of a colourful crowd that assembled at Taylor Square in east Sydney's Darlinghurst on for a planned march towards Randwick Racecourse, where the Pope will hold mass for up to 500,000 people.

Many of the hundreds of people rallied by the NoToPope Coalition, were wearing shirts emblazoned with slogans including "Bless me father for I am homo", "Thank God I'm an atheist" and "If God hates fags then I hate God".

They were joined by a devil bearing the sign "I do not exist", the fluorescent pink alien the Raelian Movement has named Pope Alice, along with drag queen Vanessa Wagner.

The coalition won the right to "annoy" World Youth Day (WYD) pilgrims in a court battle earlier this week.

The Federal Court struck out the section of the clause in WYD regulations that made it illegal to "annoy" participants, punishable by a $5,500 fine.

However, it is still an offence to inconvenience pilgrims.

"We did it, we made it here," NoToPope Coalition spokeswoman Rachel Evans said.

"We're really happy with the turnout.

"I'm especially happy with all the gorgeous T-shirts and placards showing gay pride is alive."

A total of 6,000 condoms, red in colour to promote HIV awareness, will be offered to WYD pilgrims during the protest march.

The coalition argues the Pope's views constitute a conspiracy to murder, because opposition to condoms leads to more people becoming infected with HIV.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said he hoped Saturday's demonstration would remain peaceful.

What is wrong with the GAY community. They expect society as a whole to be tolerant of their chosen lifestyle. Yet they can't show the same tolerance and respect for everybody else in the world, and they wonder why. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME.

So it turns out that they are crusaders rather than pilgrims!

Sorry to deflate you again Graeme but read the story again, it is 'a World Youth Day Pilgram' singular meaning ONE Pilgram.

If the homosexual had flaunting his/herself in a Middle Eastern country, the Police would have bashed him/her. Why do they have to advertise their sexual deviation on the streets?

Reading the comment from Alan Scott you would think that the gays bashed the pilgrim, not the other way round!

God doesn't hate fags, He loves all people regardless of who or what they are. I agree with Alan; Religious people don't turn up to the Mardi Gras and protest homosexuality, so why are gays intimidating World Youth Day participants on such a big occasion?

Strange..My books says." If a man shall lay with a mn, and uncover his nakedness, to me this an ABOMINATION" . Now even my Feeble grasp of this, the ENGLISH language, tells me that there is just a little difference between LOVE and ABHORRANCE. Who knows, some one may have changed the meanings on me?

Isn't this "NoToPope" Coalition nothing more than the "Raelians" group ?? If so, they should be locked up themselves for stupidity. If anyone deserves to be protested against it's these loonies. Actually, reading their website you'd just laugh at them not protest.

The very fact that gays were outnumbered by such a huge magnitude must prove to them that their lot is against what the majority of people hold sacred. Their pathetic & hideous demonstration only highlighted what we don't want in a civilised & respectable society. The majority of decent people would have been embarrassed by them-especially today.

Of course not,We all know that those pilgrims MUST be HOMO-PHOBIC? Isnt everyone who thinkls they had a right to either agree or disagree with Homosexuality being acceptable? Who invented that word?Homo=of man, Phobic= A fear. A fear of man means we are anti- gay? Stupidity in itself. fear no man,but he who can destroy your soul. i think all these GAYS should get over themselves and try accepting us for once. us as in the majority of our population, hetrosexuals with rights as well? i think?

If people are gay, and that is how they are, it means that if they really want to live a committed Christian life they must remain celibate. Their orientation will remain the same, but they want the whole package! The church can't keep bending to be popular. It must stand up to moral values that say that families consist of a husband and wife and children, if any. Jesus didn't promise everything. In fact, He said to take up the Cross and follow me! Discipleship is not meant to be easy.

Gods book says he loves the man, not the sin. he also says that if man wont seperate from the sin which is an abhorrance to him, that man will be removed from the book of life. The amount of times a text has been taken from a passage in the bible to back some movement or another is huge. Churhes themselves are to blame for many as they have bent many to suit their need at the time.eg.women clergy, and gay marriage. Bob, I fear many are taken to hell on the back of their selfishness and greed.

God's love does not mean accepting anything! It is pure and must be sinless. Repentence means turning around and not sinning. God's love means He loves the person and hates the sin, and wants to sinner to repent and turn away. It means making live choices, His way. Even heterosexuals often have to be celibate to live a truly Christian life. We don't go to battle without counting the costs.

There are good and bad people in all walks of life.Being a member of a religion dosent make you righteous its your actions that count. There are muslims who kill, and catholics that rape and buddhists that steal.that applies to gays and politicians and police for that matter. The point is, being a human comes with the ability to choose and you can choose wisely or foolishly. Its the motive behind the choices you make. No one is perfect. learning leads to understanding, wisdom leads to happiness

" Verily I say unto you, it's not by wotks that your are saved but by Faith and Faith alone ". Aparently actions have no bearing on being saved. All people regardless of belief and orientation woud do well to simply treat others as they wish to be treated. Dont expect the whole gay community to come on board though. Arrogance is still arrogance and denial is just that. The Hetro-phobic of the gay community are to caught up in self indulgence to bend with the wind.!( new word?)

I agree, my homosexual friends can live as normal, hard-working people, they don't go out and provoke trouble or invite trouble. Our homosexual and hetrosexual group don't advertise our affection or sexuality. This group went out of their way to intiminate and annoy the Pilgrams; they probably got the reponse that they expected.

I agree Alan, tolerance, isnt that what is asked of us by the gay community, do they think they are showing tolerance to the pilgrims, or do thy believe tolerance is only something expected with regard to them. Respect is earned, so is tolerance, if you wish to receive either, earn them. Amazes me how the word 'hypocricy' has been thrown around the last few days, all used in the same sentence as "Catholics". Maybe the gay community should practice what THEY preach. Learn to respect yourself.
