Bosnians celebrate war crimes suspect's arrest

22/07/2008 4:40:00 PM.  | AP

Honking cars, singing crowds, overflowing bars: The streets of Sarajevo were jammed with euphoric crowds early Tuesday as Bosnian Muslims celebrated the arrest of Radovan Karadzic, Bosnia's most wanted war crimes suspect.

News of the Monday evening arrest of the former Bosnian Serb leader spread throughout the Bosnian capital within minutes - even before it was reported by local media.

Residents poured into the streets singing, chanting, calling everyone they know. Many spilled out of downtown bars in shock - overwhelmed at the news they had been waiting to hear for over a decade.

Ignoring the pouring rain, young men ran down the main street waving Bosnian flags. Some dropped to their knees, slammed their palms against the ground and chanted "This is Bosnia!" - in apparent retort to Karadzic's war time attempts to annex the country to Serbia.

Karadzic faces 15 war crimes charges including genocide, murder and inhumane acts committed during the 1992-1995 Bosnian war.

"I still cannot believe it," said Zijah Sehic, 18, leaving one of the raucous crowds to go home and watch more news on TV. "I can't wait to see him in the tribunal in a few days."

Bosnian TV carried reports from other mostly Muslim-dominated cities in Bosnia, where similar street celebrations were taking place.

In Kozarac, in northern Bosnia, the organiser of a rock concert interrupted the program to announce the news but received only laughter from the audience and thumbs up for a good joke.

Only after enough mobile phones rang and rang and rang did the crowd begin to grasp what had happened, said Zinaida Mahmuljin, who was in the audience. Then the party really started, she said.

In Srebrenica, a mother who lost two sons in the Srebrenica massacre that Karadzic is alleged to have masterminded welled up with emotion as she watched the news on television.

"After 13 years, we finally reached the moment of truth. For the sake of justice, General Mladic should be arrested too, as well as Karadzic," Munira Subasic told AP television.

"I think this brings some settlement in our hearts and brings us forward to the future."

Former Bosnian Serb military chief Ratko Mladic, also indicted for war crimes, remains at large.

Bosnian President Haris Silajdzic welcomed Monday's arrest but noted that Karadzic's legacy of ethnic cleansing had left scars that were still visible today.

Over 100,000 Bosnians are dead and hundreds of thousands of those expelled in Karadzic's ethnic cleansing campaign have not returned to their homes.

Still, Silajdzic said the arrest will restore victims' trust in the justice system, a comment echoed by others.

"We have been waiting for 13 years and we lost hope," said Kada Hotic, a Srebrenica survivor, the worst atrocity in Europe since World War II. "Now we know - there is justice."

Yet in Bosnia, one group's villain is another group's hero.

Since the end of the war, the country has been divided into a republic run by Bosnia's Christian Orthodox Serbs and a federation between Muslim Bosnians and Catholic Croats.

Overnight reactions from Republika Srpska - a name Karadzic personally gave to the Serb republic - were rare.

Officials did not make public comments and the streets were deserted.

Local TV showed a reporter stopping several cab drivers in the northern city of Banja Luka. Most said they had no comment on Karadzic's arrest, but one called it "a tragedy."

Karadzic's wife, Ljiljana, told The Associated Press by phone from her home in Karadzic's former stronghold of Pale that her daughter Sonja had called her before midnight with the news.

"As the phone rang, I knew something was wrong. I'm shocked. Confused. At least now, we know he is alive," Ljiljana Karadzic said, declining further comment.

After reading this, seeing what constitutes war crimes i can only ask, " When does Howard, Bush and Blair" stand trial? Or have i got it all wrong? One must have to be of ETNIC origin to face these courts? Sorry I'm confused. Bush authorised the dropping of the LARGEST fire Bomb on a poor Afghan vilage in his pursuit of Terrorists. 13000, Gone! No crime in that? Can someone with more insight enlighten me?

Nick Off, Maryborough. People like you that turn on your own government (Howard) are a disgrace and do not deserve the great freedoms that we have in Australia, and you do not deserve to be called Australian.

Garry, you are a nasty little piece of work aren't you? Maryborough has asked a legitimate question. Why not try and answer it instead of running him down. Gary, answer this, why have the US opted out of the international criminal court? Is it so they can drop the "LARGEST fire Bomb on a poor Afghan vilage in his pursuit of "Terrorists". 13000, Gone"? No doubt you will reply with a insult instead of a substantive response crushing my point. That is because you have no point,Gary. I am an AUSSIE!

Nick Again, Maryborough, seems you will never be enlightened, if you don’t understand terrorists should never be allowed to rest, and must be wiped off the face of the earth, and then hopefully maintaining a free democratic Afghanistan, then you have very little hope. The figures of “13000 people gone” are most probably your friendly left wing and terrorist propaganda, and you don’t mention the fact terrorists fire weapons from schools, hospitals, and kill there own. Why side with the enemy Nik

This is for BART..R. Heard of the TEN yr war? I dontr side with the"enemy", I question the Courts! GARY BENSON, Try reading something other than the chewing gum the Allied propaganda machie pushes out. Who knows you may increase your IQ past 2! Then you can become a drinking buddy with Bart here! This war on Terror? how do you win a war aginst something that has no place, To Beat it is to Martyre it. This will go on for many years. No one wins in Afghanistan, History has proven it!

To Nick Off, Russell and the other anarchists....go trash other countries and respect the one you live in (as well as its leaders). Respect for your PM (regardless of political leanings) is not much to ask.

I agree. When will that little despot stand trial for his crimes? The nation turning on Howard? What a joke. It was Howard the piece of sub-human filth that turnt upon his nation. It's an insult knowing that Rudd has condoned Downer and Fischer to be Diplomats and ambassaduers.

Hi Nick, I can enlighten you regarding the difference. Basically 8000 Bosnian men & boys were rounded up in Srebrenica, identified as being muslim, stripped, robbed of all personal belongings, & exterminated one by one before being thrown into a mass grave. The purpose of this was to exterminate muslims, this is genocide. The "allies" on the other hand were conducting war like activities. I can't explain further because I'm not familiar with the 13000 dead villagers you speak of.

Hi concerned, thanks for reply but understand the Bosniian/serbian Conflict and disgraces. The Fire bomb was the Biggest in History, Consumes all oxygen for miles and cinders all iin its path, think cheap hydrogen bomb. The 13000 was what the village population used to be, a few survived but were badly burnt. For the IDIOTS above, I asked a valid q. Sorry if its above your intelligence to consider it.I didnt mention what modus ops the terrorists use as it had no bearing on what i was asking.

I understand fully WHY they want Karadzic and have no arguement about it. I have no time time for Terrorists either. Bart R, On the Afghan issue, read some history! The Village i spoke of was covered on 60mins? There is a difference mate between chasing terror and creating the same. The USA went ot war in Afghanistan before, removed warlords and put Taliban in power, now doing the reverse? Why,Intel puts Bin laden Out back of Pakistan? Is A mercenary a terrorist? A partisan? Enlighten me wise one

Hi Nick, I will look up the 13000 villagers, thanks for the info. I don't have a problem with us being in Afghanistan as long as we all stick around long enough to fix it this time. My issue is with Iraq, there where never any Bin Laden terrorists there, that is an undisputed fact! As you say Pakistan is THE place, however the Pakistanis are actually co-operating with the UN. As for a definition of a terrorist - good luck - history shows us that todays terrorist is tomorrows hero/martyre/leader.

Concerned, I spent Hrs trying to find it last night to drop in the link, no luck, maybe a search on 60 min archives might track it? They called it MOAB?However much chasing tails say the ordinance level of this weapon remains static.I think also that now the New PM. in pakistan is getting tight about offensives against these Nutters, restricting access to UN/Nthn Alliance etc. Me thinks this fight has many yrs to go. many many yrs.

Doesnt matter, after MUCH reading of International treaties etc tec I have the answer for myself. For Gazza who cant read what's writen, thanks for your diatribe.I still dont see where i rubbished my country but someone as wise and Knowledgable as your self and BARt, obviously see past what I wrote. Now for a question you really should be able to answer Gazza, where did the taliban come from? How did they Originate? I dont hink you will answer because i really doubt you know.

You want to get caught up with where did the Taliban come from? GIVE me a break mate, who cares, they exist, they are hostile they hate the west, they need to die. Quite simple. You’re caught up in an infantile ball mate, think outside the left wing propaganda square. By the way get back on the above issue

You Accuse me of siding with the ENEMY, yet you seem to know nothing about THE enemy except they're bad. Sun Tzu."art of war". "To know your enemy is the key to defeating your enemy". As for my original q. do YOU know why they wont or dont ever have to face such a court? Can you even get your head around WHAT i was trying to find out? No. You show your intelligence by berating me as some traitor to this country, merely for trying to find an answer to something. HERO!!

Tuesday, 22 July 2008

Nick, I expect you believe they originated from the CIA, a little more propaganda , like comparing Howard with this genocide killer. Grow up. A terrorist is a terrorist, cowards who kill innocent people in the vain hope of 72 virgins and paradise. The overwhelming majority of Taliban movement were ethnic Pashtuns from southern Afghanistan and western Pakistan, along with a smaller number of volunteers from elsewhere, for example Europe or China, receiving training and arms from Pakistan.

No Susan I dont. I know where they're from and HOW they came to be. I even Know how they managed to get control of Afghanistan. I also know where the reseves are found. Yes truely. Also I dont believe i have stated they should be treated nicely or left alone. Niether have i compared anyone to anyone else. Just merely asked i someone could answer a question About the INTERNATIONAL Court. Do you know why the Alliance will Never have to wrry about the COURT? Is that slandering MY country?I think No

Susan - not all terrorists are muslim fundamentalists looking for virgins. Nick - the US will definately face the international criminal court because although they signed the treaty, to my knowledge it was never ratified...and so they are only an "in principle" in agreeance to it, and part of their conditions was that no US defence force memeber or politician could be subject to its jurisdiction. No idea about where the UK stand. As for us, we are subject to its jurisdiction.

Well Said Russel Jones of Toowamba - and totaly agree with Nick Again, Maryborough - History has proven that no one wins in Afghanistan, British got defeated Russians and now its time for USA - If Australia continues their involment in Afghanistan they will regret it sooner or later.
