Lloyd meets with lawyers after being bailed in Singapore

24/07/2008 2:14:00 PM.  |
Veteran ABC journalist Peter Lloyd met with his lawyers in Singapore today after he was bailed on drug charges, but refused to answer questions from the media about his predicament.

Lloyd, who is the broadcaster's South Asia correspondent, was released on bail yesterday after being charged with possessing and trafficking the drug ice.

A sizeable media pack asked questions today but Lloyd declined to answer as he left his lawyer's office with a family member.

However, Lloyd's friend Tim Palmer issued a statement saying the reporter wanted to thank everyone for their support.

He said Lloyd had "no complaints at all about how Singaporean authorities have handled this matter".

"His health has improved ... which is very heartening for all of us," Palmer said.

Lloyd - who faces up to 20 years in jail and strokes of the cane if convicted - evaded journalists after he secured bail yesterday.

The 41-year-old, who is based in New Delhi, was arrested last week while on leave in Singapore.

He is charged with trafficking about one gram of methamphetamine to a Singaporean for 100 Singapore dollars ($A75) at a hotel early this month.

He also faces a second charge for allegedly being in possession of about one gram of ice.

His case is to be heard again in court tomorrow.

Part of the week Lloyd spent in custody saw him undergo treatment at a medical facility at the Changi prison complex for an eye infection.
