New charges laid against ABC's Peter Lloyd

Veteran ABC reporter Peter Lloyd was dealt a fresh legal blow on Friday, with three new drug charges levelled against him in Singapore.

The broadcaster's South Asia correspondent now faces a total of five charges in relation to a type of methamphetamine known as ice, and the veterinary drug ketamine.

The fresh charges allege Lloyd was found in possession of utensils that carried traces of methamphetamine and others tainted with ketamine, nicknamed Special K for its psychedelic or hallucinogenic effects.

He was also charged with consuming methamphetamine.

But the new charges carry penalties less severe than those he faces on his original two charges of possessing and trafficking methamphetamine.

The trafficking charge attracts a maximum penalty of 20 years in jail and 15 strokes of the cane.

Lloyd, 41, refused to talk to a large media contingent as he faced the Singapore Subordinates Court on Friday for the third time since his arrest in hospital on July 16.

During Friday's brief hearing, Lloyd nodded, grim faced, but did not say anything as the new charges were explained.

Wearing a checked shirt and black pants, Lloyd stood at a podium facing the judge, who extended his bail and adjourned the case until August 1.

He carried a reporter's notebook tucked into the back of his pants.

Friends and family, including ABC journalist Tim Palmer and his sister Cathy, appeared tense and upset following the hearing.

Defence lawyer Tan Jee Ming said the new charges were "comparatively not that serious" when looked at beside the original two.

The initial charges allege Lloyd sold a packet containing 0.15 grams of methamphetamine to a person identified as Sani bin Saidi for $S100 ($A76) at Singapore's York hotel on July 9.

The other alleges he was found on July 16 to be in possession of a packet containing 0.41 grams of methamphetamine.

The New Delhi-based foreign correspondent was on leave in Singapore at the time of his arrest.

if the trafficking charge gets dropped(hopefully),my bet is Peter will get 2 yrs jail for possession and serve 15months out of it for good behavior(you get 30% reduction in Sng) I bet in this crime obsessed society,p.r agents will be already ringing his lawyer to see about movie, interview and book deals. Not even Hollywood could dream up a script like this.He received a United Nation peace award for journalism-a long way frm Chiangi.I hope he has the constitution to deal with it.m

Maybe people who do drugs-any kind of drugs- just need to stay away from most Asian countries. Surely who doesn't know Singapore! They did not make these laws yesterday.Yes they make a huge fuss about a simple 'gram', but it's their country, their say, their law, SO JUST STAY AWAY!The day Nguyen Tuong Van was hanged like some cold-hearted mass murderer is the day i knew Singapore is no joke - Dec 2 2005. Let's stay away from these contries, shall we?
