The recent interest in the infamous Roswell alien incident was given another boost yesterday by ex NASA astronaut Dr Edgar Mitchell, who said his information came from “old timers” who had been involved in the alleged cover up.
The former Apollo 14 veteran and sixth man to walk on the moon was recently swept up in the controversy for his comments made on a British radio program where he expressed his belief in aliens.
But in an interview with BlogTalkRadio’s ShapeShifting, an internet radio program dedicated to the paranormal, Dr Mitchell went even further saying there had been an outright cover up of the Roswell incident by the US government of the day.
Dr Mitchell said his position as an astronaut meant many high ranking intelligence and military personal had felt comfortable telling him their stories and “getting it off their chests” before they died.
"(They) selected me and said, independently – this wasn't a group effort – independently that maybe I might be a safe person to tell their story to,” he said.
“And all of them confirmed, and what I'm saying is they confirmed the Roswell incident was a real incident and they in some way had some part in it that they wanted to talk about.
"The crash of an alien spacecraft in the Roswell area was a real event and much of the lore, I can't say all of the lore, but much of the fact that dead bodies were recovered and live ones were recovered, that they were not of this world, was the story.”
Roswell, which occurred on July 7 1947, was quickly dismissed by the US Air Force as a downed weather balloon.
The incident has since become the focal point of countless UFO conspiracy theories and has been firmly implanted into mainstream American pop culture, featuring in numerous TV shows such as the X Files and even spawning its own dedicated series.
Dr Mitchell said the weather balloon cover up was “pure nonsense”.
