Alcopop sales down, spirits up, but Roxon says it's all in the seasons

The tax on alcopops is being defended, after the release of sales figures that appear to indicate drinkers are being pushed toward hard spirits.

Since the April tax hike alcopop sales have fallen by 30 per cent - but bottled spirits have increased by 50 per cent.

But Health Minister Nicola Roxon has cast doubt on the figures, accusing the alcohol industry of twisting things to suit their own agenda.

“What is concerning is that the industry are prepared to selectively use this data to protect their profits rather than protecting young Australians, which is what the government is trying to do,” she told LIVENEWS.com.au.

“I think it would be better if the industry were up front about seasonal changes that occur at this time of year as they did last year.”

“Spirit sales do rise at this time of year.”

I think that it's Roxon that is "selectively using the data". Spirits contributed significantly to the last inflation increase. ETS will do the same, ie increase inflation and not fix the problem. Rudd has no idea.

What the hell would bi-polar Nicola know ? Surely she couldn't be accused of selectively using the data to protect the governments policy and budget position rather than protecting young Australians. Can the real data regarding changes in sales of alcopops and hard liqueur since the new tax changes came into effect be produced for all to see ? Or as we all suspect, we're going to be subjected to claim, counter-claim, spin and bullshit !

This Labor government lies when the data does not fit its argument. This will be part of Rudd's downfall.
